Someone broke into my mom's car and took away my GPS that was inside the armrest.
The garage has it actually on the video, but i guess that's not much help...

The GPS was 2 y old, but it meant a lot to me. had some addresses saved, doh...

i just needed to vent.............
i hope the dude gets lost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry about your break in.

On my gps, I do have the home location stored, but it's not quite home. It's within ~1/2 mile of home (nearest major intersection - if I can't get home from there, I have serious issues ).

Good luck!

no, they can't. (at least that's what they say )

they say it's just a receiver... hm, i wonder though how is it possible to determine the current position if the thing does not send any signals...

It's supposed to work by triangulating it's position from 3 satellites at the same time.

I'd be real surprised if they couldn't track it down though. Won't is probably more like it.

It determines the position by receiving signals from the GPS satellites in orbit. By comparing the time sent out by the satellites the receiver can tell how far it is from them, then compares it to the known maps in its memory, then triangulates the position.... or something like that.

True, they can't locate something that doesn't send out a signal. It would be like trying to find your wallet if you lost it.

I just remembered that actually it wasn't in the car after all and checked with my dad.

I remembered that i used it to find my way home after the bash, and after turning it off, i would have put it in my purse, which i did!!! it fell out of the purse yesterday in our other car, i just checked with my dad. so, it's not stolen after all. but my mom's window is smashed, probably because of the GPS mount.

wow, i'm really happy to have it back, but i guess it was a lesson for the mount.

don't leave it in the car people!!!!

thanks for your kind words! XOXOXO to all of yoU!!

Yeah, that's a big thing: hide your GPS mounts. Thieves see those and know there's a GPS in there (except in your case ) They also see the suction cup mark on the windshield and use that as a sign for a GPS in the car.

I hate thieves!!!

That sucks supergirl, hopefully the vid will help get the asshat that broke in

on a side note, a huge tipoff to theives that there might be a gps in the car is its mount. people leave the cradle attached to the windshield and often leave the unit itself in the car I leave my suction cup mount attached to my windsheild since reattaching it securely is a pain adn it has come flying off at me a few times. I do however take the cord, adn cradle clip off the suction cup mount, and I will be putting a pad of paper in its place cause who wants some postit notes that bad.

garmins have an option, at least mine does, to require a 4 digit PIN to be entered to unlock the unit. there are 3 ways to get past this pin on a garmin
1) enter the correct number(i think it bricks after a set # of incorrects)
2)return to a specific location where the pin was set to unlock with a bypass
3)send to garmin to have it unlocked for an outrageous fee(95% of new unit cost i think it was)

Thanks for the info!!!

yeah, i hate thieves a lot!!! remember, my F3 was stolen... i hate i hate i hate them!!!

a friend of mine actually suggested even wiping away the suction cup mount mark on the windshield. i just think i'll never mount it again LOL!! just keep the charger.

i'm still trying to think what else was in the car.

i have an update from my mom: she was actually parked not even in the parking garage, but on the parking directly where she works, an outpatient clinic. it's a parking lot with a security guard and cameras. they are trying to figure out the license plate number right now.
my mom says, the screwdriver that they used to break the window is on the back seat. they have emptied the gloves compartment (insurance info and stuff) onto the seat. they didn't take the leather gloves, or CDs. I can't recall what else was in the car.

I just think it's plain stupid to risk being caught just because the GPS mount. In the middle of the day on a guarded parking lot.... people are either really dumb or really desperate...

well, as i said, it taught me a few lessons.

NO mount
modify the saved addresses and the home address.
mount some kind of fake alarm even if the car doesn't look like it's worth much.

the thing with the GPS units is their popularity, and high price tag, along with essentially being untracable, they are very easy to sell. its also very east to conceal once stolen, doesnt look stolen like a car radio that got torn out would and are very easily to grab and go with.

everything that makes them great for the owner is making them great targets

I'm thinking they might have taken my Bose headphones. i think i took them out of my purse when i arrived at durty nellies. at least it would explain the reason to break into the car. i'm not sure on the headphones either though. i'll know when i get home.

T, get yourself a beanbag mount. They go for $20-40 depending where. They are quite stable on the dash, even during hard cornering. No marks get left behind on the glass from those suction cup things. When not in use, put it in a bag under a seat or hide it elsewhere out of sight.

Also, for those of you that do have your gps stolen, be sure to contact garmin with the serial #. If it should ever come in for service or anything, they'll likely help you out.

Dankeschoen

I actually even found my headphones at home.
After thinking it thru and thru, they have taken the Kia user manual/the thing that's in the car when you buy it. I don't recall anything being in that little folder other than the manual. they left the insurance info, but obviously they have the address.
Now, to the garage opener. It's gone it seems, so my dad will be changing the code today.

The screwdriver that they used to break the window was still on the back seat.
it was a bit chilly on the way home LOL!!

Yeah, i've seen the bean bags. I'll give that a try! Thanks!

Thanks for all your kind words!

glad you aren't missing it after all. for anyone using a garmin, i found this great backup link. save all your save points and i think poi's but i'm not 100% sure on that. i've used it a few times and works great. you do have to download something for it so that it detects that but you can get it off of garmin's site iirc
