the last minute deals are very good at a lot of places in Mexico. Check applevacations and funjet. I paid ~$850 for three nights at the iberostar tucan in playa del carmen but I booked early (a friend's wedding). One of the guys who booked last minute got six nights for less than what paid.

My name is JB, people call me JB

Have you been to Mexico before? Do you want something more relaxed or more party/touristy? Do you care if the water is not crystal blue? All the places you mention are nice (west coast) and there is tons more just need to know what type of vacation you are looking into.

I'm looking for somewhere not too commercialized (i.e. Cancun) with a beach with preferably crystal clear blue waters that are calm so that jet skiing is enjoyable if I so choose to do so. Scuba would be nice but so would a town that has a more traditional part without the fear of being kidnapped. A traditional night club would be nice in case we wanted to go but it's not necessary. I'm looking for more of a relaxed vacation without so much partying. But I don't want to stay in a hut with mosquito nets and what not either I've never went on a vacation like this in my life so I'm not even sure exactly what I want.

Also I'm not really in to the tourist thing where you go look at monuments and what not to take pics. I could careless about the history of Mayans and what not when I'm on vacation.

I am also considering the Carribeans as well but I heard it's a lot more expensive there.

Crystal clear water would be on the east coast for sure. +100 on applevacations, great place to research and book. Anything 5 apples plus will ensure you have a very nice if not luxurious hotel.

Not all caribean is very expensive, worth looking into; however, I am not crazy about the bahamas and mexico is the shortest flight. Also, I prefer spanish speaking destinations as their culture is to bend over backwards for the customers, bahamas, jamaica not so much. (JMO)

I personnaly really like cancun, as you am not much into the "tourist" things you mention, and when I go to cancun I pick a very nice hotel that I do not have to leave except to do a little variety at a restaurant or club. Last year we stayed at RIU Cancun and it was a very nice relaxing vacation.

Look into rivera maya. It's cheaper, less crowded, and newer than Cancun. Most of the hotels get redone after a mean hurricane 2 or 3 years ago. It's a little farther from the airport, but worth the trip.

+1 on the Riveria Maya. Specifically Playa del Carmen. I think it fits your criteria as it is less crowded than cancun, you can scuba, clubs down 5th avenue (I think that was the main street).

If you do go to a place where you fly into Cancun airport, look out for all those people selling timeshares right after baggage claim. Sharks.

This is where I stayed:

And this is a great website for opinions/experiences at many destinations and hotels:

Puerto Escondido

My roommate is originally from Mexico and when he goes home to visit he drives 5 hours to a hostal that is family owned in Puerto Escondido. Lots open beachs in the area. More locals and backpackers so its alot cheaper. A three person room is $30/night and a bear is about 1.50 at the local bar. If you want the info for the place let me know.

+1 on Apple Vacations!!
The last time I went to Mexico I stayed at the big Iberostar outside of Playa del Carmen. It was top notch!! Everything was included in the price and I think one of there buildings is adult only if you are looking for that.

A lot of European people stay there and they like to go topless at the beach. (not always a good thing to see)

I came here to drink some beer and kick some ass. And it looks like we are all out of beer.

If diving is your thing, Cozumel has the best diving in MX. There's a big enough town to have normal bars, clubs, & restaurants, but not so big it's lost that island atmosphere.

Lots of good all inclusive deals to be had as well. If you've got questions on specific resorts or dive operators, shoot me a PM. I've been there a handful of times.

If you like Playa Del Carmen, shoot Eva a PM. She might be able to hook you up on lodging.

I've been to Mexico 4 times in the last year and a half.I'd have to say that cozumel would definitely fit your criteria.the diving is the best I've ever done.check out iberostar in Cozumel, it's far enough away from the city and other resorts.

I've been to Mexico a couple of times, Riveria Maya, and it was very nice, but I liked Punta Cana in the Domican Republic better. The water was nicer and warmer.

but there is absolutely nothing to do outside of the resort there. now if you want stuff to do in Dominican Republic - go to Boca Chica http://bocachicabeach.net/index_english.html

Santa Domingo is 40 minutes away and there is enough entertainment and civilization outside of the resort

Riu hotel is the place to go. You can find them anywhere. Very nice people, service and food. At night they have programs and disco make sure to get All inclusive deals. I've been to Playa Del Carmen they have 5 diff Riu hotels that you can go to, same previlages so you wont be bored seing same people every day. You can also rent moped/scooter very cheap and dont worry tourist always have the right of way. Good luck and have fun peace!

We just went to Dreams Puerto Vallarta via Apple Vacations and it was great. Private beach, only 10 min cab ride away from downtown. So, you can have the best of both worlds if you want it.

Also recommend Punta Cana in the DR, but like others said, not much to do besides beach it.
