vista question

any vista power users wanna help me out here...i just started using vista so im far from used to it and even farther from happy with it. i loaded and few programs on my machine and i put my music on there. my music adds up to 130gig. i tweaked the user setting and got everything just the way i want it so now its time to run a system back up/restore point. so i start up the back up utility and it tell me i donít have enough disk space to make a restore point. im thinking wtf? i have a 500gig hard drive i should have plenty room. so i look around in explorer and the c: drive is telling my it has 228gig of space used with only 224gig free. the math doesnít add up here. i added 130gigs...where did the extra 98gigs come from?? now i understand that operating system takes up space as well at the programs i loaded up but im thinking that can only add up to about 20gigs MAX. so that leaves me with 72gigs of unused and missing space???

any one care to shed some light on what im doing wrong here??

How big is your c:\windows\winsxs folder? That could be taking up a lot of space.

Info on the winsxs folder:

EDIT: Nevermind I see that the system isn't registering the space instead of it just being used.

the winsxs file is 6.7gigs so ya that is a big file. the total C\Windows file is about 12.5gigs. im assuming that is the operating system.

i have looked through every file (well i think every file) in the c: drive and it all adds up to around 150gigs yet when i look under c: drive properties it says it is 228gig..im missing some thing here. i have reboot just to make sure everything is registering and nothing changes

the 500gig size of a HD is in its UNFORMATTED state, formatting uses up a decent amount of space, on my work compy here i have an 80gig drive, formatted size is 74.4 thats a loss of 5.6 gigs on an 80 gig drive
your drive is 6.25 tims as big, so... that comes out to 33.75 lost

actual size of the drive is not what im confused about. the drive reads 492gig in size. its the missing space inside of the drive. there is over 70gigs of space that is being used or "missing" or not available. total space used 228gig, total space im able to acount for 150gig.

are u sure it's not some manufacturer's backup software? We had some IBM software that would backup the PCs and take up the space but windows explorer couldn't see the files.

The OS also manages a swap file that may not be allocated to a "file".

do you still have your pr0n folder set on hidden attribute? thats probably your culprit.

yes i think that is what is going on. i jsut need to figure out how to shut it off. i will do my own back ups and not waist so much disk space.
