Why do the French Stink?

I'm trying to help my daughter w/a school project but am coming up empty after numerous searches as to the true origin of the stigma.

Does anyone know the true history behind the myth?

I believe It goes back to the middle ages and has something to do with the plagues and the dead in the streets but I'm not certain. I've been searching online but finding little more than opinions, not facts.

In the Middle Ages, they (I don't know if it was the French specifically or all Europeans) thought that a layer of dirt kept disease away. The wimmenz flocked to old Ben Franklin because he used to bathe daily.

The French are known for eating some pretty strong cheeses. Limburger, gorgonzolla, stilton just to name a few. Eat enough of that stuff and it seeps from your pores.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

Regular daily bathing is a phenomena of 20th century American indoor plumbing. (Who wanted to take a bath everyday in the living room or on the backporch with all the work it entailed and all the bad weather that was encountered?). That along with the disappearace of the stench of horse manure everywhere (thanks to the automobile) that masked the BO of those who bathed once a week or less. It was also noted that bathing more was proving to be more heathful. The French got the memo but refused to read it because it wasn't written in French! Certain other Europeans missed the memo altogether.

While this is written "tongue in cheek"...there is some truth to it.

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

If you want to anger a conservative, tell him a lie. To anger a liberal all one must do is tell the truth!

During the 14th century, it was considered unhealthy to bathe, the water was a source of cholera. Only the wealthy has access to good water, and the norm was once a month bathing. The court of Louis XIV was known as the perfumed court because they used large quantities of perfumes to mask body odors, and could afford them.

Also, clothing was dirty & stinky because the materials during that time were fragile & the dyes were not good quality, so it was not possible to wash the clothes. As a result there was flea & lice infestation.

Does anyone know the true history behind the myth?

me thinks,,, americans deemed the term stink french because of the wide varieties of smelly cheez n the horibly small showers. Space has always been an isue in French cities such a leon and paris and with the advent of modern plumbing comming into the civilized world many small rooms were upgraded to be bathrooms,
In a french shower there is no rain head, its a wand you hold, they do this because they do not keep the water running while they shower, its expensiv 4 them.
same with bath tubs, they dont fill em up, they shower down, lather up and rinse off.
to Americans it seems goffy but like i said it has a lot to do with $ and space.

thats my understandin of it, have family and friends there and this is what i can derive from my xperiences

The French stink becasue they disagreed with GW about invading Iraq.

In addition to not bathing regularly (which is really dependent on location-- Parisians, for example, bathe regularly but people out in the country might do it less) they also do not wash their clothes with the same frequency that Americans do. We typically wash after 1 wearing; the French (and other Europeans) might wash after 2 or 3 wearings. In short, even if the person doesn't stink, their clothes probably do.

When I was a kid, her cousin from Switzerland used to come stay with us and he bathed every day but he still stunk. My mom explained the whole phenomenon to me. And then, when we were bad, she would take his undies out of the laudry basket with a pair of kitchen tongs and chase us around the house with them.

I used to work for a company with a French owner he did stink. I had to travel with him a bunch of times and he had an "odor" everytime.

Having lived in Europe for nearly 2 years, I think ill_ag has it. They don't wash their clothes nearly as much and don't have AC, mostly due to insane energy cost there.

Except it should be modified to say SOME Parisians bathe every day. A very large portion are still as smelly as the rest of them.

and CBray is also correct. From what I saw, France had perhaps the worst hottie:nottie ratio I saw. Tied with Stuttgart. Southern Spain is where its at, like 80:20, I kid you not, followed by Rome.
