Never got to see one of those in action. I recall the 0351/0352s talking about how this thing was so much cooler than the dragon system because it "jumped" in order to hit the tank on the topside where the armor is thinner. Previous systems were direct LOS/LOF.

Cool shit.

The Javelin is one bad ass anti-armor system. The Dragon was wire guided, the Javelin is laser guided. You can switch it to two modes, one shoots straight, and the other is just like int he video. You can actually shoot helicopters with those. One round is about $70 grand so not too many people get to practice with the live rounds. Never got to fire a live one, just the simulator.

I was an M1 tanker for years. Top armor is weak. Front armor is strong. Tanks are designed to fight other tanks, not choppers or infantry. Tanks aren't obsolete but are not designed for the wars we are fighting today.

Well, also lets not forget that modern tanks can also carry active protection systems.

Reactive armor is only placed on the sides of the tank, not the top.

I always thought this was a "feel-good" gimmick. I held very little hope that I would come out alive from a direct hit from a weapon such as this. Sure, they have ammo containment doors and exploding panels but no way are you walking out of this alive even with those.

Small arms, sure a tanks the place to be. In a conventional war only a few specialized units will carry these weapons and tanks will be used to advance fronts. When the advance ceases and units take up occupation tanks loose their advantage.

I always thought of tanks as death traps. I'd rather take my chances being a grunt. The bigger the piece of machinery that you are going to be in, the bigger the weapon that is going to be used against you.

And look how that turned out in the Nam and Iraq. The only tankers I'm hearing that eat it now are the ones that drown when the bridge they drive over collapses under the weight or they are sniped while on guard duty.

Also, those are warm climates. I'd take a tank in winter over a parka any day.

Actually in Iraq they got messed up pretty bad. Like I said, bigger vehicles=bigger bombs. Usually the driver got the worst of it, since he's located so close to the ground.

Provide stats vs. unmounted infantry or other vehicle and I will listen but I just can't believe they are worse than unmounted infantry or hummer survivability.

I'm speaking form experience. Where I was at, that's how it was. I didn't say that grunts have better survivability than mounted troups. I said that I'd rather be a grunt than a tanker.

I didn't know there was another tanker on the board. to a fellow 19K.

Yeah, the top armor is very thin, especially compared to the front.

Tanks still have their place on the battlefield. I'm just glad the Javelin is on our side.

BTW, that missle does some wicked damage to a Martian Tripod.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Ya, I'm a tank addict. Ever since I was a little kid climbing on that steel at Cantigny.
