What, does the number 911 have some significance? Whatever.

They will never stop people from sharing music. They can only slow them down.

If you haven't already and are using Kazaa, download Kazaa Lite. No popup banners and they can't get you the way they're getting people now because you don't login with kazaa lite, but you can still download stuff from all kazaa users.

My username on Kazaa along with a million other people is [email protected]

naaaaah....I'm kinda staying out of it....I'm not a huge music fan anyway. I'd much rather hear the sound of my bikes exhaust screaming along the road

I just picked this up somewhere and thought some people would want to know

As far as the "big picture" is concerned? Probably nothing. But I'll be damned if I can afford $12,000 to the RIAA. But like Crazeinc said my login name is kazaaliteuser.

I used to have awesome hookups where I could get pretty much every single album released ripped at 192kbs about a month before they came out, but as soon as i got a job in the computer industry I decided I'd rather do something else with my free time than sit in front of the computer.

kazaaliteuser is fine and dandy but all they have to do is subpeona the ISP (they do have your ip, so that's easy enough to find out) and the ISP has to cough up who the user was that was on that particular IP at that particular time... Way too easy to still get you even if you use k-lite. Your best bet is to leech like mad while you still can, because p2p networks are going to start looking like ghost towns once the lawsuits start flying.

You really think that will put a stop to p2p? Napster's case didn't, why should this? All it takes is some adaptation to new rules and regulations. That's what loopholes are for

I think this recent round of lawsuits will have a much bigger impact than the case against Napster. They are now going after individual users, people are going to be alot more worried about losing 12k+ to fines and lawsuits. I don't think people cared as much when Napster was sued because that was a company / network that was being sued.... there was no risk to the end user in those cases.

Is it going to stop sharing...no, people will eventually find another way around it. For now though I think it will slow it down.

Yeah, but if they are only tracing people by IP, you know how easy it is to masquarade(sp?) them? All you need is couple of smart guys to add that to any p2p software. That's of course only an example.

Has anyone here ever use wingates? To do "reasearch" on servers thru telnet? Same idea.

Yes it's easy to grab IPs, but it doesn't mean they're even going to go through all that trouble. They may eventually. At that point I just get a little sneakier, I'm not really worried about it. It's not I'd be buying these cd's anyways, the music these days leaves a LOT to be desired.

Masking your ip is easy to do. It deals with signing on via proxies.

The $12000 out of court settling is just one example. I would expect to see higher penalties. They are saying it will be anywhere from $750 to $150,000 per song. I doubt many if any will hit the court room because of the size of the penalties but damn that is harsh. How is the general public supposed to break the law if we can't speed on the streets or download music and porn????

Has anyone seen the TV ads about piracy? It was weird. They show all these people working on a set giving 2 second testimonials about how they can't pay for health care, or the dentist, or can't put themselves through school.
