Riding with vision disability

I have a friend who wants to buy a small cruiser and start riding. He only has one eye. He's going to take the MSF and see how comfortable he is with it, and go from there. Does anyone have any experience riding with vision disabilities or know somebody with a similar situation? He drives a car just fine, btw. Feel free to pm me.

well, there may be no depth perception..but most things you see on the road clue you in to their position. For example, a car waiting at a side street, you can tell is in front of anything else that begins on the grass/anywhere in front of it. he'd also have a good idea of sizes of objects to help put their distance in perspective if he's older/dealt with it for a long time.

Try going outside and covering up an eye...only trouble i'd see having without one of them would be doing something like catching a baseball, trying to hit 2 pencil tips together, etc.

You still have depth preception with one eye. However, your periferal is severely limited.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. I don't think it's a very good idea, anyone that rides should know how often you get merged into, not being able to see that coming on one side could spell disaster.

Only with close objects, she should be ok with distance objects. Obviously, I have both my eyes, so this is just info I remember from bio class. Where's a pirate when you need one?

From Wikipedia:

Depth perception arises from a variety of depth cues. These are typically classified into binocular cues that require input from both eyes and monocular cues that require the input from just one eye.[2] Binocular cues include stereopsis, yielding depth from binocular vision through exploitation of parallax. Monocular cues include size: distant objects subtend smaller visual angles than near objects.[3] A third class of cues requires synthetic integration of binocular and monocular cues.

According to this, you have some depth perception with one eye.

I don't read it that way, you have cues as to depth, but there will be situations that fake you out so to say.

Kinda like wearing a helmet all the time. I think your friend should try it. I know of mc riders and pilots with vision in only one eye. I have ridden and flown with them and have seen their skills. No problem.

Well, I say 1 good person with 1 eye can see better than a 2-eyed soccer mom driving an FUV that's all over the road.

For reference, refer to Odyssey's training class last summer at Plainfield HS, where a soccer mom drove her FUV thru the obstacle course. Never mind that there were people standing there and riding around cones ... She's more important than us.

... but I'm not bitter.

Randal: [to Dante] Would you grow up!
Becky: [to Dante] OK, I'm only telling you this because we're friends, but sometimes, in the heat of the moment, it's forgivable to go ass-to-mouth.
Randal: [chuckling] Ha! I knew it.

Simple. Close one eye and look around. Can you still tell that your coffee table is closer to you than your TV?

From wiki:

Contrary to popular belief, however, such a person is still possessed of a faculty of depth perception using monocular cues which is fully functional for "natural" situations, with unimpaired abilities at catching, throwing, aiming, driving, and other tasks which require depth perception. Only the ability to perceive artificial stereographic images is absent.

No dude, you don't. Why do you think you do? Close and eye and look around. Many people wear eye patches without issue. Look it up online.

well as a person with almost this exact issue, I can speak in here. I have lost most of my vision in 1 eye due to my M.S. I can say sometimes it can be a problem. That's why I always wear my glasses. I do it not only for protection, but also incase a bug hits my eye or other crap and if u wear contacts, your FUCKED! I will ride up to 45mph without a helmet, but have to wear one after those speeds because the glasses don't deflect enough wind away from my eyes.

I can say I truly don't have any issues riding and once u learn on how to adapt on the normal everyday stuff, riding is no different. U learn to pay alot more attention to things. I say have him try it.

The only issue I encountered was playing games of pool sometimes or trying to catch a baseball/softball. I can't stand directly in line with it coming at me. I actuall move over tithe side so I can catch the angle of it, otherwise I totally mis-judge it. That's the reason I quit softball playing anymore. I would suggest a helmet at all times. And I'm sure they have a DL that has him needing both outside mirrors.

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

Last year at Barber I pitted next to a guy with only one eye. The first few sessions he followed a friend that he rides with regularly. After that he picked up the pace but still made sure he had plenty of room. It seems like it only really affected him with quick close encounters.

I asked him how he does on the street and he said he has to be more careful (give more distance for reaction) unless he's riding with a good friend.

If you ride like there's no tomorrow, today will be a BLAST!

There really isnt any one answer that will be for sure.

When you lose a eye or hearing etc all the other sense are greatly enhanced to make up for the lose and unless you have an eye missing there really is no way for anyone to have a clear answer.

The only person that will be able to know is him. Try it if he finds it to hard then he will have his answer if not then he will be enjoying what we are all doing

go time traveler style and go back in time, fuck his grandma, then shoot forward in time and then fuck his mom. Then return back to present state and call him a the product of two incest whores and hes your son and show video of you plowing the both members of his family. .

I was born very far sighted. When I went for my kindergarten check up, my vision was tested and I couldn't tell which way the biggest "E" went. I was found to have 20/600 vision in my right eye. My brain just couldn't put together the two pictures, and it decided to shut off the right eye basically.

Anyway, I never have had nor will I ever gain depth perception like someone that has two functioning eyes. I race motorcycles, drive cars, I've flown a plane. We adapt.
