A laboratory robot called Adam has been hailed as the first machine in history to have discovered new scientific knowledge independently of its human creators.

As cool as this is, I find it mildly creepy.

I'm more creeped out by their usage of Adam and Eve as the robot's name. Now that's just asking for trouble

Adding to the creepy factor, did you see the article on the Honda brain interface?

http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.../03/31/1518238

"This latest work uses EEG to measure the electrical activity in a person's brain and blood flow within the brain using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to produce data that is then interpreted into control information. ... Honda said the system uses statistical processing of the complex information to distinguish brain activities with high precision without any physical motion.""

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

For the first time, MIT researchers have shown they can genetically engineer viruses to build both the positively and negatively charged ends of a lithium-ion battery.

The new virus-produced batteries have the same energy capacity and power performance as state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries being considered to power plug-in hybrid cars, and they could also be used to power a range of personal electronic devices, said Angela Belcher, the MIT materials scientist who led the research team.

Blame Bush! ...err... sorry, wrong forum

This is heading towards my hypothesis that human kind isn't going to be killed off by natural causes, we are going to kill ourselves off because we just had to go too far.

...Though it is pretty frickin' cool.

I'm also annoyed that the first computer figured out physics in a day. I'm sitting here trying to figure out rotational motion for class. I have many semesters of background classes as a foundation, a textbook with all the rules in it and put in hours of studying and still don't have it 100%. Then this muthaF'in computer comes along and figures it all out IN A DAY ?!?!?!?!!

Fuck that computer.

lithium iron phosphate batteries... all of the benefits of lithium batteries without the weakness of extreme flamability if punctured. thus making the robots powered by then and run by that computer program above even harder to kill, and even if you do damage the battery the damn bacterieas that built it will rebuild it adn the machine will come back to life.

and why wait for plasma rifles in the 40 watt range, they seemed to be doing ok in T3:ROTM, and theres even more hope projected in T4

I say do it, yea humannity will probably end up killing itself by going to far but how do we know what to far is until we get there

You're thinking about it all wrong.

Think of it as, if the computer can figure it out that quickly, then it's only a matter of time before it leaks down into simpler computers.

While it won't help your immediate need to understand rotational motion, it will help me in the future when I need to use rotational motion, but haven't done so since college

Yep. I can apply 6 credits of undergrad classes to my law program. Most people take business or accounting or something like that.

It's my last semester, so I took a 5 credit calc based physics course, just for shits and giggles. (and an excuse to get a sweet Ti-89 titanium, which doesn't seem so sweet now because it can't learn physics)

You are a glutton for punishment if you took a 5 hour calc based physics class for fun. I always found that kinematics was much easier than E&M but I only took Phys I. Maybe you are taking one of the higher level courses.

PHYS 221.

And I am a glutton for punishment. All because I wanted to find out how much Titanium rotor bolts would really help on my bike.....

False, that's like asking your dog to learn that physics for you. A smart computer would tap into each less capable computer it could and combine them to super-computer levels. In fact, I read an article where some scientists took a bunch of PS3s or 360s and built a super computer with them...imagine with the broad base of consoles out there right now what a Skynet like computer could do with consoles alone!

Einstein said it best: It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.

And no, I don't sit up at night daydreaming about stuff like this...really, I don't.
