The western conifer seed bug has become a nuisance pest in many Rhode Island homes. The bug has the habit of entering buildings at the onset of cold weather in the late summer or early fall as it seeks a protected site to spend the winter. These bugs do not bite or sting, nor do they cause damage to the home. They will, however, give off a pungent odor if you handle them. They also may make a buzzing sound when flying.
Box Elder is very similar and more common in these parts..... although the photograph
lacks the reddish orange around the body....... hard to tell from the photo.
Box Elder's are the devil. I had a royal battle with those suckers for a whole spring/summer/fall. The tend to be around Maple trees, and are the most disgusting things ever. acckkk.
Dont worry about those. They are harmless. Much like Box elders and asian beetles, they are just a nuisance pest.
