Is nothing made here?

I'm in the market for some cookware, pots and pans. WTF. Everything I look at is made in China. 1 exception, I did find a set made in Italy. All brand names, cafilon, farberware, t fal, wolfgang puch, all made in China. I do try to buy American made, but nothing is made here. All Chinese shit. I stroll down and look at knives. Same thing. Brand names, henkel, chi cutlery, etc all made in China. WTF. No wonder unemployment is at all time high. Nothing is made here. About a year ago I bought a set of knives. I saw them on a cooking show I like to watch. They show a factory tour video, and even say in the video "lifetime warranty" They will even resharpen them for no charge. Every knife made is stamped with the initials of the final worker to sharpen it. They even say if you need to send it back for sharpening it may well be the original guy to resharpen it. So I get my knife set home, and look to see the initials. Ha. The dudes name is China. Then I look at the box. On the bottom, not the sides, not the top, but the bottom, in the tiniest of letters, made in China. If these companies are so proud of China made why not on the top and all 4 sides? In big fuggin bold letters. Fuggin rat bastards. If Chinese shit is so good, be proud of it. Rat bastards.

Even the celeb cook endorsed stuff. Paula Deen, Todd English, I can't remember the others. All Chinese made shit. These rats all put their name on products and get a piece of the action. It doesn't make the product any better, just more expensive.

Says that their bonded cookware is made in the US, but other parts are made overseas (probably China). That's pretty understandable is this day and age.

Quote:
All-Clad has a policy of manufacturing all of its bonded cookware in the USA. This means that it purchases its metals only from US suppliers, and bonds them at its own rolling mill on-site in Canonsburg PA, and then forms them at the same location into high performance cooking vessels.
Quote:
All-Clad’s tools, accessories, lids or electrical kitchen appliances, are manufactured by select partners overseas qualified carefully by All-Clad with highest quality specifications.

We've had a few discussions about this at work recently. This country is great for being able to automate things that people don't want to do. It's amazing that the government doesn't fund (or people don't choose to start) factories that can produce items as cheaply as china labor + shipping of goods back to this country. I'm sure this discussion could go on very long.

OTOH, everything that we make at work is done as locally as possible with local parts and labor.

Too be fair, not everything is low quality from china. Things are made to the specifications that are sent to them. So if it’s seems cheep you can’t always say it’s because of them. The problem I see with this, is the downward spiral of the US it self.

With china being our bank, and us giving them guarantees that we can’t pay back… We are losing a our Identity as a country. Not to mention our super power status…

I thought china was a communist country… I guess if it serves our purpose then it’s ok. Well, we still have Cuba, we can fuck with.

I’m a disappointed American.

As a small local manufacturing firm my company tries to use local sources for as much as possible and it is very often cheaper to go local on some things when we need smaller quantities.
But when larger quantities come into play Chinese suppliers are so much cheaper it's impossible to be competitively priced while using domestic suppliers. We do have a lot more quality issues with chinese suppliers than domestic ones but the cost savings are still high enough to continue using them....these cost savings are keeping this company afloat.

China on the surface is Communist, underneath they are a greedy capitalistic country. The government cares only about 1 thing; money. I avoid buying Chinese crap if at all possible.

P.S. It would be nice if the import tax laws reflected those of the pre-1980s, hope that's something that Obama can fix.

EXACTLY!

I am having something made in china. It was WAY out of my price range to have my product mfgr'd here. Would have bankrupt the project. US labor rates were stupid.

It cost me 1/4 as much to have run the exact same DMM by the Chinese Engineering firm as the quote I got from a local American shop. We're not talking about tens of dollars here of difference here, but thousands. Several of them. Couldn't afford it. If I did come up with the money it would have made my product cost more than anyone would have paid to purchase.

I gave them very strict specifications and tolerances and they are VERY good about hitting it. VERY good. Surprisingly accurate and consistent. Everything is in writing that they will refund or replace anything that does not meet the spec and that keeps them on their toes.

Absolutely. American workers demand a higher level of pay/benefits than those in other manufacturing countries, so manufacturing overhead here is astronomically higher than countries like China. Couple that with overwhelming consumer demand for cheaper prices and price-driven competition among companies. Its no mystery why products aren't made here, and if they were people would be starting threads angry about how much american shit costs.

my favorite labor rates are some unions. I know guys that do the same work I do and get paid more than double what I make...stupid imo.
