shipping bike to europe

I am planing a tour through euorpe; originally I was thinking to use the railway, but I am thinking about shipping my bike to Amstredam or whatever, and do it on the bike. I found a few website resources but wanted to ask you guys if you had any bikes shipped.
Anyone shipped bikes overseas ? how much would it cost? time to send it? all that stuff?

Im no expert, but I'd guess it would be easier/cheaper to rent a bike there. Rental bikes are pretty common in Europe from what I've read

You would also have to figure euro liscensing and insurance on your own if you ship your bike. If you rent, the rental place will help you with that

Not to mention you would have to pay to ship your bike back to the states when your trip is over.

I think LuvinTwins did this recently as he is in a middle eastern country for work. He might be of some assistance.

https://www.chicagolandsportbikes.com...ad.php?t=85958

looks like he's getting it shipped by his company...don't know if it'll help at all.

I bought a BMW on the European delivery plan some years ago, rode it all over the continent and shipped it back, but I don't think BMW offers the plan anymore.

Check out this website though:

Good luck. I've also read of people buying used bikes for just this purpose after they got to Europe, then consignment selling them after they were done. Just a thought.

My company is sending mine from here to Bahrain at cost, it then goes against my facilities budget. For a comparison, airfreight will be $630 cost (not including customs) and well oer $3K price if I paid full price, whereas a private quote for sea freight (6 weeks) is $1500. My bike is going space available, so it may take up to a week to get there.

Do what these guys said and rent, or buy and then sell on consignment. Less hassle.

Yeah, that's a good thought. The model I bought was manufactured for the US market.

Oddly enough I just read an article on this in an old RRW

Check out the March 2008 issue if you have it, obviously it's leaned towards shipping a race bike

from what i read... I'd rent.. For a standard bike it's not worth the risks

They do offer it for cars still, a number of manufacturers do, it's like getting a free 2 month vacation if you can spare the time away from work.

Another option (if you're mechanically inclined) is to purchase a bike used and then sell it on the return. Work it out with a dealer in advance, and its almost as cheap as a rental (this works for three weeks or longer trips, over different countries--where rentals might not allow you to visit all the countries).

A friend of mine did this in AU for a month and sold it back to the dealer, less $1000.

A lot of you guys have no idea what are you talking about!

If you bring your bike to Europe you would need International Drivers License + US License, you would need to arange for insurance (Green Card) and your bke must have stock exhaust. As long as you have the US plates you should not worry about polution you are not importing the bike to EU, just visting.

Airfare with Lufthansa Chicago-Munich was around 1500 bucks one way.
