AGAIN?! Are you f'ing kidding me?!

Well, once again, I've been taken out of the riding season for mechanical problems.

The bike: a 1980 Yamaha Maxim XJ650, 34K miles. Hey, it was free (someone owed me a favor).

The problem? During the afternoon ride, it had been having some shifting trouble. Before this, a noise that sounded like a rotary tool with fingernails being applied to a chalkboard was coming from the engine for a number of weeks. We're pulling away from the stoplight and it makes this *clank chunk clank KAPOW!* and dies. I push it to a gas station and Igor and I take a look at it. Almost no oil left- what the hell? I just did a full oil change three weeks ago? I know it was used to do the freeway shuffle into Chicago from Dundee for a number of years before I got it. So now, apparently it's been burning a hell of a lot more oil than originally suspected.

I put a quart of oil in and managed to ride it home, although I couldn't get it to go more than 45mph. It surges, backfires, and sounds like a Jiffy Pop full of nuts and bolts. Survey says: Thrown rod?

Hey, Andy? Remember when I said that I didn't feel good about taking the bike over state lines? YEAH.

It looks like I'm not gonna have enough saved up for a bike until winter. In the meantime, I'm gonna end up missing the next six months of riding season. Is there anywhere y'all could recommend that could do a title loan for about $2K or less? I was kinda hoping with a lower amount, I'd be able to get it more easily than one for $4-5K. I'm not looking for anything too high tech- just something that'll get me through the next season or so (older CBR, GSX-R, something like that). I don't care if it's carbureted, just so long as it runs consistently.

Suggestions?

When the pepper spray runs out, can I have your number?

So how come you didn't have it looked at as soon as the nails on a chalkboard thing started, rather then riding it for a couple weeks with a problem brewing?

The bike is (was) almost 30 years old and had had next to no maintenance before I got it. It made all sorts of noises from every moving part. I'd been keeping oil in it and doing all the regular maintenance before that.

Also, I've never owned a properly working bike. All of the bikes I've owned have had their own little quirks and noises, I'd just learned to work around them.

I dunno man, after everything that happened with my ZX-6E (read: spending the last season splitting the riding time with pushing and wrenching on it), I'm not sure if I want another Kawi :P

If you take out a loan, might as well take out another 1k-2k for a total of 3-4k and buy something decently nice.

Heh- I knew it was coming- I was just hoping I'd be able to get at least some part of a decent season out of it.

+1

My insurance company asked if I wanted full coverage when I registered it. Which is funny, because that 50cc bump makes it MORE to insure than my old '97 ZX-6E, despite the fact that the KBB on the Maxim is $900 on a good day with a fresh coat of paint and everything working properly.

Right now, my only real question with it is how to distribute the parts.

Take off the carbs and clean them with a toothbrush and 409. You will be amazed what you can get for them on eBay.
