OK, so I splurged and picked up Plants vs Zombies since I had a 10% off coupon for Pop Cap games.
Here is a quick mini-review.
The gist of it is that the zombies want to get in your house and eat your brains. I thought this was going to be a turret defense type game, but to my surprise is a lateral defense game. Basically the Zombies come from the right, and you setup plants that shoot, trap, eat, explode, or simply block the Zombies from getting into your home. You collect sunlight that falls from the sky, as well as from your sunflower plants, and purchase seeds that you choose before you go into battle.
Right off, the first couple of levels made me think I wasted my money as the game seemed made for a 5 year old. But after a few levels it ramps up drastically both picking up the pace and complexity. As the game progresses you see wave upon wave of new Zombies and you gain access to a myriad of new defensive and offense plants. The as the levels progress you will defend your backyard with a pool (with Dolphin Zombies and Zombies with ducky waders), and eventually wind up on your roof keeping Zombies from coming down your chimney.
The basic game is simple, if a bit monotonous, but the real fun comes in the mini-games and bonus levels, and there is even a Zen Garden you can plant and care for. I finished the game last night, and was delighted to find a whole slew of puzzles and min-games that were even more fun then the main game! Zombie Bowling, i, Zombie (where you play the Zombie), Begouled (Bejeweled vs Zombies) and many other neat games I've not fully explored yet. And you can even go back and replay the main game, but it now has small twists that force you to come up with new strategy.
One of the addicting points is power-ups. During the game you'll pick up coins that you use to purchase power-ups from your crazy neighbor. I find most of the power-ups useless in the main game as Strategy and efficiency is really the key, but later on in mini-games and replay of the main game, the power-ups are far more useful and fun!
I paid for the game because I love Pop Cap games, but I know you can find it up on Demonoid, though I don't know if there is a crack available...I didn't bother to look yet.
