Itunes not reading music?

So, I have my music located on my external hard drive. All my music from Itunes is pulled off of there to be played etc.. well it seems in rotation of about twice a year for some reason my itunes will STOP reading where my music is. Then all of my music can't be played because it says it "has to be found" etc.. is there a particular reason why it'll STOP picking up where the music is? I didn't change anything, the music didn't move. It's all there in the same spot. Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

is it a network drive? or directly connected to the computer?

does the drive ever get disconnected or lose power for any reason?

I've run across that before. I remember having to rebuild the library or something to that effect.
