For Those Born & Raised in Illinois

Did they teach you in Driver Edu when driving on the Hwy to go IMMEDIATELY to the far left lane and set your cruise control for 61 mph????

My job has me on the Hwy doing a ton driving from Appt to Appt and I SWEAR TO GOD that I see this happen 5 times within each stretch of my driving - I get 90% of my passes through the far right lane which is WIDE OPEN - Does Illinois follow some European standard that I am unaware of? - THEN, when I do pass Cap't 61 in say, the center lane, I GET the dirty look????

Did I miss something at the DMV as of late?

Nope... no hwy etiquette regarding "slow traffic, stay right" was ever taught in Driver's Ed... not when I was in it back what... 20 years ago?

The lack of hwy etiquette drives me nuts around here... one of the reasons why I hate Chicago.

those are the people who are upset that others are driving faster than them. so they will "impose their will upon you" by driving slow in the left lane.

I like to impose my extreme tailgating to those people. You want to mess with me driving faster than you, then I'm going to put us both in danger of an accident.

+1!!!

Absolutely NO highway Ettiquete here in the IL/chicagoland area! I love when go to places like AZ and they have the HOV lanes and 4 other regular lanes and the left lanes are ALWAYS clear!

I HATE driving on the highways around here! You'll consistly run up on a 3 strong line defense running from left to right ALL GOING THE SAME EXACT F$CKING SPEED! Running into a slow driver in the left is ANNOYING! Running into 3 slow drivers that are blocking the entire highway ROYALLY PISS'S ME OFF!!!!

ERRRRR!!!!

I disagree about WI. once you get north of Milwaukee or Madison. The drivers are very respectful. I assume once you get far enough out side of Chicago they are probably respectful as well.

They are bad in Orlando and other Florida cities as well. except in florida they do 10-20 under the limit

Like you Noodles, I will do this and just about implement the Nascar bump draft to get their ass out of the way. IF they don't move I save a good 20 miles off my current tank of gas by drafting .

People are assholes here. You can sometimes fool the 3 lane defense by backing off pretending to be concerned about something else like the radio. The people holding up traffic will see that you are not annoyed and one of them will slow down or speed up opening space. That is when I gun it and split them up fast and Furious style and take off . People get sick sadistic pleasure around here pissing others off.

61 is faster than the speed limit and is a danger to your safety. Thank these road vigilantes for saving you. Speed kills.

That's another thing I like about this redneck ass state. If there is someone parking at exactly 70 (speed limit on most expressways), you can be assured its got IL plates. Hoosiers may not be bright or cultured, but at least they have some sense of road courtesy.

Flashing your high beams on public roadways is a ticketable offense as of a couple years ago I believe. It can also be considered Offensive driving if done when someone cuts you off, you can lose your license for that one IIRC.

Sometimes people will tap their helmets to warn of cops. I'm not sure if that is a ticketable offense or not though.

I love driving out in DC. The left lane is Autobahn. Right lanes for the slower cars, and 9 times out of 10 they respect that... but, get out into the country and the water is infected...

I LOOOOOVE driving in Michigan - They respect the far left and even in the center and far right, that traffic is moving north of 85 mph - I just laugh when I see the far right lane WIDE OPEN here in Illinois

Okay, was just curious - In the last 5 years or so, my territory was in the City so I never really drove that much - With the new gig, I am everywhere and am just now seeing this first hand - Does not matter to me on the bike as I just bob and weave like little Jerry Sienfeld thru the madness

You'll more than likely get close to run over. Drivers are pretty nuts. My ex-father-in-law played a nice prank on me my first visit there. Told me to be sure I went the speed limit, 55mph on the beltway, the cops are super strict. Wellp, I went 55mph and almost got shot...

exactly, and you go West, most people respect the left lanes when the limit is 75mph... doing 90mph = no problem!

Says who?

You can be ticketed for leaving your high beams on within 500ft of another vehicle coming in the other direction, or 300ft going the same direction.

Quote:
25 ILCS 5/12‑210) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑210)
Sec. 12‑210. Use of head lamps and auxiliary driving lamps. (a) Whenever the driver of any vehicle equipped with an electric driving head lamp, driving head lamps, auxiliary driving lamp or auxiliary driving lamps is within 500 feet of another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction, the driver shall dim or drop such head lamp or head lamps and shall extinguish all auxiliary driving lamps.
(b) The driver of any vehicle equipped with an electric driving head lamp, head lamps, auxiliary driving lamp or auxiliary driving lamps shall dim or drop such head lamp or head lamps and shall extinguish all auxiliary driving lamps when there is another vehicle traveling in the same direction less than 300 feet to the front of him.
Thats what you're getting ticketed for, not communicating a speed trap.
Second, there is no such offense as "offensive driving"

It's illegal, and it's been ticketable for a LONG time. I almost got a ticket for it when I first started driving, which was nearly 20 years ago. Since then I never flash the lights; if other's speed then it's their own business; I'm not out there to help them avoid tickets.

So isn't that what I said, you can be ticketed for flashing your high beams at someone?
