Sure, just leave your wireless network open and broadcast the SSID.

spliting cable is easy, my next door neighbor and I do this. just ran a line through my backyard and into my garage and from there underground to my house. Him and I split the bill.

Been spliting it with my parents for years. I pay the bill, they get free DirecTV. Easy to do if you think about it.

Just gotta know what signals you got, what kind of splitters you need and if its satellite then what kind of receivers you need. Its really easy to do, the hardest part is getting a cable to location #2.

That is a dumb idea. If you are sharing your internet and the other people down load a crap load and the ISP cuts you off, your problem. You also are open for more problems, and what if the other people down load stuff they shouldn't (child porn or crap)? guess what, the ISP is going after you.
We had a case with this a few months ago, it wasn't pretty.

Do you realize how many people get internet off their neighbor? Doesn't justify it but it's a ridiculous amount.lol

+1
If you are sharing your internet the cops will bang on your door. Child porn, illegal activities, even emails are search for key words and it will come back to you. No you have to prove its not you. (ISP will find out what you have done at this point and your liable to 3 time what they think they lost.

Not saying this is not done all the time, but you have to trust the person you do this with.

And it's also that much easier to hack into your network.

If you are going to 'share' you are better off keeping your connection wide open, no keys, etc.. that way you have plausible deniability that it could have been ANYONE using it. You are nothing more than a dumb ignorant customer at that point and they'll just drop you as a customer.

If you try to lock it down then you have narrowed their list of people...

Hopefully you also know enough about networking to put your network behind a firewall. Otherwise you're exposed to anyone who connects to your network via wireless.

Also, besides being a violation of the terms, you are also splitting your bandwidth cap with anyone who connects. Your neighbors do a lot of downloads and you can exceed the cap and be disconnected.

Yup and Yup... you can be dropped as a customer for violating the Terms of Service... That's a lot nicer punishment than the alternatives out there

When I am on a job site and need internet access I'll find the closest subdivision and drive around until I find an open network, jump on, take care of business. Works great. lol.

I'd say your best bet to share internet through wireless is to not broadcast the SSID and set your routing table up to only allow a certain IP range (the range you'd assign to your neighbors) to bounce to the internet only and not see your internal network. Without this routing they will be able to see your computer(s). If you have the default accounts open (admin) you could open yourself up to some security/privacy issues.

I would keep it secured and give my neighbor the code. If police knock I would give them my computers the send them next door. It would obviusily be on their computer.

downloading isn't a problem - uploading is... when it comes to performance

the other thing... well that's a good thing
Plausible deniability
Something bad comes down the pipe and there is 1 person on it.. that's bad
something bad comes down the pipe and they don't know which of the 10 people who downloaded it... easier to defend

So... assuming payer is the said kiddie pr0n enjoyer.. it's win

speaking about splitting your stuff on the internet.. prolly not a good idea... chance of getting busted.. 1 in a million.. but still not a good idea..

like video taping a crime spree

some home AP/routers actually have a provision for Guest and Private access
the Belkin N1 comes to mind...

You have open internet only guest access (that you can monitor to a point (stats not bits to put it simply.. and obviously the latter is possible, just not on the device)

and private access

So they actually sell a router that has an easy to config option for a guest open ssid - and for secure access (which has local LAN access not just WAN)
