anyone sell a car to Carmax?

Just curious to see if anyone has sold a car to Carmax and see what they got for it in comparison to KBB? How was the process? looking to get rid of an suv and this would be more convenient.

They offered me about 35% of blue book for my truck and I told them to shove it. If you just want to dump the vehicle, go for it but you will take a bath.

I sold my Jeep to them a while back. They hosed me, but warmed me up with lube first. I knew it was coming at least.

Last few years their prices have been well below the trade-in value + tax savings.

Just see what they will give you. Sometimes they give pretty good offers, and other times not so much. They gave my brother in law something like $1200 for a beat up 99 Passat with 150K miles that needed a lot of work. I thought that was a good deal for him. I would have felt bad selling it to someone on the street for that much.

I would have taken that if they offered it to me. My KBB was 11.5K and they offered me 4.5K

I don't remember the exact numbers, but I think I got 4k on a trade-in for my explorer, Carmax offered 3k. They are good for getting cash quick, but they gotta make money too right? You can bring your car in and they will give you an estimate in about 20-25 mins.

Hey J, what hole did you crawl out of?

PM Greg (gkotlin); his Dad works at CarMax in Schaumburg and I worked with him for a quote on my SVT Focus. I ended up selling it privately as their offer was WAY below KBB value.

I've taken cars there for estimates and they are always way low, BUT the last time I took a car there, they gave me a fair price...very close to kbb. I was surprised so I took it.

Sold my '02 GTI to them for $8k back in '05, KBB was at $10. What you get depends alot on:
-The buyer who is looking at your car
-Cars that they already have on the lot and if your Corolla will be sitting next to the 10 others they already have on the lot
-Cars that have been moving off the lot
-Cars that have been selling at their auctions if they know they can or will not sell yours on a carmax lot.

Another thing is after they appraise the car, if you have aftermarket stuff on your ride that you want to take off and sell separate, be all means do it. I had my full system in, navigation and all, suspension mods, wheels, engine mods, I took it all off. Drove the car in with stock everything, just the front speakers working and sitting on steel wheels with no hubcaps and my winter tires. Still gave me my $8k quote value

An SUV right now might be tough.

They are in the business to make money.... some on the purchase, some on the sale.

my mother in law just sold her '98 accord to them. They gave her 5k, which was far more than she was offered on a trade in. Your mileage may vary.

Worse idea.....

You only get the tax of the agreed value.... so say 1/3.

And while some of these are reputable charities some take the car and do not
take care of business on title transfer and such.... and you are the last registered
owner..... I have a friend that donated a car..... and later had legal issues.

I sold them my Subaru Impreza a few years back. I researched market value (ebay, autotrader, etc.) not KBB. Carmax was about $1500 below the average. I was happy not to have to deal with tire kickers and the waste of time that comes with trying to sell a car privately.

To find KBB value, check www.kbb.com I just had Carmax appraise my Caravan. Offered me $6500 which was based on auction values more than KBB. Lots of Caravans on their lot.

If you have a car that is popular, selling to Carmax will be easier than private sale and net you reasonable $. Other than that, private sale is more hassle, but will usually net more $, as you will get higher price and more than enough to cover the the tax offset in your next purchase.

This is very supply-demand based.

Lot's of SUV's on lots now and low demand due to gas prices.

Would suspect that they will low-ball you .... but you never know.

It is definitely worth the time to have them appraise it.

When I sold cars, if my customers didn't like what we offered for their trade-in, we'd send them to Carmax. They'd either get a better deal and sell it there, or bring it back and trade it in.

Most of the time, Carmax was a better deal though. My ex-girlfriend traded in her Ford Focus, and our dealership was going to give her $2500 (which was a good value according to KBB), and they gave her $4900.

Went and got my appraisal from Carmax on Thursday night and it was pretty close to what was posted on here. The truck KBB's in Fair condition at 4540 and Carmax offered 1700 for it. Needless to say I m keeping it or giving it to my nephew.

i sold my truck to carmax in schaumburg a few years ao. Long before this price wars happened with the gas pumps...kbb on my truck was about 12k, and they offered me 10k CASH...i had no use for the truck anymore...so i let it go...i had lower then average miles...and she was mint!!!...if u do go to sell it to them, i would suggest washing and cleaning it up as much as posable beforehand...and it was completely painless, quick and great dealing with them...but just like any place, they r going to want to get the most bang for the buck...

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

Talk about reviving an old thread.

Day 1: Went to three dealers looking for an 07 to 08 Avalanche. The LT's I looked at all had different things about them that turned me off and were a little rough around the edges. The first dealer advertised 2 AVY's on the internet but were suspiciously sold 2 hours after my inquiry and confirmation that they were available. Went to CarMax because an 07 LTZ was just listed at a reasonable price. Checked it out and it was the cleanest inside and out than any I had seen on the other lots. Took it for a ride and committed to buy. The process from appraising, selling my vehicle, and purchasing the AVY was quick, easy and stress free. The only repeated questions were " Are you sure you don't want the extended warranty?" All in all a positive experience.

Day2: Took the truck back to CarMax after running the VIN I found out the LTZ I thought I purchased was actually an LT with the highest level equipment package. Similar but not quite the same as an LTZ (no roof rack or autoride suspension or chrome bits). After explaining the situation to them, they figured out that they had indeed sold an LT as an LTZ. The manager apologized profusely and we worked out a deal because I really liked the LT. I ended up cancelling the original order and they resold the truck to me for a lower price. That process was simple and took less than 1 1/2 hours to complete with no hassle. I have no complaints with CarMax.

I sold them a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee back in 2002 and they gave me almost twice what Honda offered in a trade-in for a 2002 CRV. However, at the time, the Jeep was popular and easier for them to sell and the Honda was an updated model and hard to get so, Honda didn't have to deal.

Take care and ride safe,

I bought my Durango from Carmax. Super easy sale, no bullshit. A few days later I went in because the tires were a bit worn (one on the wear bar). I told them it should be replaced. Long story short, Carmax put four new tires on it for no charge. And it wasn't a hassle to get it done. Once you take possession of the car, they will do anything to keep the keys in your hand. They do not want a car returned.
