Garmin route question

I noticed that some of the upper end Garmin Nuvi series have the route feature. My functional but inexpensive nuvi 200 does not. Do the ones that list routes as a feature allow and include software to literally draw out the exact streets you want to take, download to the unit and then get guided? Also can you swap routes with other Garmin users like the Zumo?
From the Garmin site it looks like this feature of mapping out the exact streets you want and getting them on your gps is only available with units that include Mapsource software. Looks like Mapsource is only standard with really pricey units such as the Zumo ($600+), otherwise you can buy Mapsource for $80 or whatever outrageous price.
As you can imagine I would like to sit at my computer and pick out some nice twisty roads, toss them on the gps and just put it on my bike and enjoy. So is there an inexpensive solution or is buying a Zumo the only way?
