I got a scanner free from a friend and programmed a bunch of local frequencies into it. Pretty cool background stuff going on with it. Anyone else do this?

never done it myself, bu had firends growing up who had dads that did, granted i think it was to keep an eye on us kids at the time.

I used to. I have two of them. One old, one new. The new one gets the 800 mhz frequencies that the cops use, it trunks the signals too. Pretty sweet.

Been doing this since I was 7 (manual dial multi-band radios)... My handheld is an older Realistic Pro92 that does all the trunking etc. Pain in the ass to set up expscially with the service codes (so it identifies who is talking on the system) but once it's set up, it's quite fun... I have mine banked out by geography, so as I go around the burbs I can enable/disable the appropriate channel banks so as to not waste time scanning inapplicable shit.

It's a great way to get a pulse on the community

They also trunk the signals for each frequency. Meaning there could be 10 sub channels for each frequency you hear.

Only on holidays because that is the best time for weird calls.

I have a scanner app on the iPhone and I can listen to different cities around the country also. It's pretty cool, and it was free at one point but I think it's 1.99 now

Ther-in lies my point (although i am faster these days), there are more reasons people mod their bikes (cars, boats...) than just to try to go faster

I still have mine, back in the days when they the government was blocking the 800 mhz bands (early 90's) so you couldnt listen in on cell phones, I was modifying them and opening those freq's back up. I cant tell you how many times I heard my neighbors credit card numbers

Scanners... I think I only have two or three at home. One of my better ones has the trunking built in to it.
I also still listen to CB radios when on the road and am starting to look into getting my Ham Operators license.

My Grandma used to sit all afternoon in her kitchen with the scanner on. In a small town it's definently pretty fun because a good % of what you're hearing is address you know or people you know.

I picked up both Iphone apps Police Scanner and Emergency radio a few weeks back. Police scan seems to have a few more channels ex.Rail yards and whatnot but the audio stream seems to be disrupted too often. Overall prefer Emergency Radio.

Have 2 older handhelds, one 900, and one thats a dinosaur that still uses crystals.

Railways are my bank 3, Airports bank 5, Naperville bank 0, Aurora bank 1, Dupage county services 2, Priority channel = Dupage county EOC (pre-empts everything if something is on here), Govt 8 and 9 (IRS sits in bank 9 only), DownersGrove, Lisle, Westmont, Oakbrook = bank 4, ISP and other state things bank 6.. Bank 7 = all the common shit like the walkie talkies, drive thru frequencies (don't laugh, it's fucking hilarious), etc.

I have one. There is always stuff going on here in aurora. There are shots fired calls almost every night. Right this second they are surveillancing some people between naperville and aurora breaking into cars.
