New or used....

...not men (we all know I like used). Cars.

I finally decided on a new car (yes, Texi the Ram is going bye-bye, after 7 good years with me). So the decision is: brand new '10 with 0 miles, or an '07 with between 20-30k miles??

Factors:
-Price difference is about $6k less for the used car.
-Financing on a used car is a bit higher than a new car.
-The used car has some more bells and whistles, but nothing I give a damn about. The '10 has everything I want, and nothing more.
-Warranty is not really an issue. The used will have a good enough warranty remaining.
-I can probably get my #1 color with a new car; would likely get a decent (but not first choice) color with the used.

I'm really almost at the "I don't give a shit" stage, which is why I thought I'd throw it to the peanut gallery to see if there were things I hadn't thought of. It has been so long since I bought a car, and even longer since I bought one I wanted. When I got my truck it was because I needed a truck, and I needed one cheap and fast (again, like my men).

True, but some people have luck with used other just dont.

As far as the prlce, that could be almost a wash if you get a new one with 0%APR.

It depends on what you're getting. If it's got lousy resale value (like many domestics), definitely buy used. If it's a Honda or Toyota or something else with great resale, the price difference becomes small enough that I'd buy it new.

Oh and another point, many banks will give you the "new car" rate on a 1-or-2 year old used car. That's what we've done with both my car and my wife's car. We bought two 1 year old used cars in the last couple years; one with 5K miles and the other with 15K. Saved thousands on each, and got the "new car" loan rate.

Probably going to keep it til 100k miles-- 8 or more years.

It's this (or something similar) http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/ctd/1408016858.html versus a 2010, in Navy.

I'd check with Carmax. Tons of my friends have been buying cars with them and getting fantastic warranties. Cuts all the unknowns with 3rd party sales.

Also used factor in that it will typically need servicing around 60k miles.

In fact, I test drove just about everything on the market right now, and this was (surprisingly) the only car that made me go "wow." Even cars a bit about my price range didn't do it for me. I'm just so blah about this whole car thing, it really sucks.

I like my cars like I like my women...USED. lol

Getting a car with 20k miles on it and saving $6-10k is the way to go. While new cars are nice, I'd rather keep a little more money in savings for a rainy day.

Did you look at the X5?

I'd look at what you'd end up spending total at the end of all of the financing and such. If it's going to be close, go new.

Yeah, the X5 was too pricey, besides caring for a BMW is more of a pain when you plan to keep it to about 100k miles. The thing about the mkx is that they were really willing to move on the price; it's well within my price range.

I really wanted a car or a wagon....I ended up deciding on a crossover, though. I'm just sick of driving a truck.

Most BMW's have 100K warranty now-a-days so that might help out. They are a little spendier but I love my 5-series.

Nope. I have a strict price limit. They are just out of it. And, as nice as they are, I just don't like them enough to justify the added expense. If I loveloveloved it, I might splurge. But since there's nothing out there that I lovelovelove, I'm not bothering to spend the extra dough.

On the same token, I don't want to go buy something I really don't like just to save $8k. That's just stupid. For me, the mkx is a good middle ground.

And, there's enough room in the back to hump.

Given what you're looking at, I'd buy used. Interest differences will eat away at it a little bit, but if you have good credit it won't come close to making up the difference. For example: Capital One is advertising a 60-month used car loan @5.69% for 60 months. Assuming you finance 25K, your total interest paid is <4K. Say you got 1.9% on a promo for the new car @31K finanaced. Interest paid=1500. The difference between the two cars is then 3500 when all is said and done. If you can't get a promotional rate, your new car at 4.89% for 60 months would cost you $4K in interest, actually more than the used car (because of the higher principal).

When comparing used to new, I check edmunds.com to see what features the new cars have over used that could be huge. While they may look similiar, sometimes they get more powerful engines, six speed trans, standard nav.....etc, etc.

No major changes in the MKX since its debut, I would get the used one:

Yeah, and that's what I had originally planned to do, but now I need a car with 4 doors. The truck runs pretty good (considering it's a '98 with 125k miles, and it's a dodge) so I was going to keep it til it died.
