Got a nasty letter today...

So I started taking the Blue Line to school everyday. When it's nice out I ride my mountain bike to the Harlem train station but as it cools off in the mornings I've been driving to the Cumberland station.
I started parking there like I usually park. I try very hard to park centered in my parking space. Well, for those who don't park there, the spaces are very narrow and thus when I get back to my car later I'm trying to squeeze in between the car next to me and mine to get into my car.
So, last week I started parking near the back of the lot and I started parking like an ass. I'll admit that, I have been parking like an absolute asshole cause I have already had scratches and dents in my doors from other cars since I have started parking there and I'd like to keep my car nice until it's time to trade it in (which won't be for another 4yrs).
So all last week and thus this week I have been parking taking up two spaces so when I get back to my car I don't have ding marks in my door and I don't risk dinging someone elses door. Only today I got this letter on my windshield.

So I ask... I know I'm in a losing situation here cause the CTA will not pay if my tires get slashed, nor will they repave the lot to widen the spaces. So for those who park in unguarded/ unattended parking lots or garages, what do you do to ensure that your car is not dented or scratched while at the same time not being an ass hole?

Don't park in train station parking lots. No way around it. People don't give a shit and will dent your car up. If there were no spots left and you were taking up 2 parking spots I'd probably shit on your hood.

At least the guy has good spelling and grammar.

When I park in the morning, 40-50% of the lot is empty, when I get back to the car around 2pm there are still empty spots around. Now how the lot is in that 6hours I'm gone I really can't say. But there are 4 levels to this garage, and all this is only the 2nd level cause the first level is almost always full and I've never needed to go to the 3rd or 4th levels to park.

I'm tempted to try parking at the Holiday Inn down the street to save the $4 CTA rapes from me everyday. Last year it was only $2. If the parking rate goes up to $6 then it's the same price to take the train as it is to drive to school.

Buy a clunker to park at a train station. $500 is way cheaper than any repairs you might have. I always take our worst car to the airport of to the train station.

BTW - SMALL cars fit in those spots with more room to spare. My Excursion has NEVER been parked in one of those lots.

I was on the phone with Amy when I got home and I thought of something similar to this only I took my scenario to the extreme of violence.

And I won't any more. Again, there are spots open when I get there, and spots open when I leave which is usually around the morning rush and before the afternoon rush so I assumed that the lot never completely filled up.
I'll check out the Rosemont lot over the weekend. Almost seems silly to drive west just to take a train east.

Don't park like an ass, its the principle. Park away from everyone, if there truly is a surplus of spaces, and keep it inside the lines. No worries of door dings that way.

What bugs me is when the lot is empty and you park far from everyone only to get out and see some dick is parked next to you. Plenty of spots, and they are parked right next to you.

that would be funny if I could afford to buy new tires. I am not naturally a violent man and when I get called on something that I know I'm doing wrong I won't push the issue. If I'm pissing ppl off by trying to make sure my car isn't scratched and dented more than it already is then I'll stop parking that way.

Just trying to get an idea of what I can do to protect my car while not being an ass but it seems like there is not much I can do except for finding another place to park as CTA won't allow motorcycles in their parking garages.

THAT. I don't care how far i walk as long as i know that i won't have dings when i come back. Your only problem is having it broken into since there are no other cars around it/no people to witness anything, sooo yeah.

LMFAO umm that parking garage by the cumberland train station is NOT the cta. Parking at the Hotel will in fact get you towed and well parking in the 4 identical buildings on bryn mar will also get you towed.

Park you car on the side streets or park normally on the top level near a wall so only one car can park by you POS.

Oh yeah if your tires are slashed keep in mind it would be vandalism and covered by insurance.

BTW im on vacation till next wensday pay me ill make sure your car stays in one piece

yeah, park in the way back of the lot so there probably won't be cars on either side of you, and don't park like a jackass.

Maybe leave a note on the car tomorrow telling the guy you are sorry but have already been dinged and you were just trying something new. An apology note might actually make him think you're a nice normal person and he might not pee on your car. Anyway, it can't hurt.
