1 in 8 HS Girls are Pregnant????? WOW !

http://cbs2chicago.com/local/Robeson...2.1251642.html
Whats the problem at this school in your opinion?

Kristyn Hartman CHICAGO (CBS)
About one in eight girls at Robeson High School are pregnant. Officials say a variety of factors are to blame.

All those young ladies are moms or moms-to-be at Paul Robeson High School. It's not a school for young mothers, it's a neighborhood school. And all of the pregnancies have happened, despite prevention talk.

If you want to know why, the people closest to the situation say there's no simple explanation.

Chicago Public Schools says it does not track the overall number of teen moms in the district. But Robeson Principal Gerald Morrow knows the count at his school in Englewood: 115 young ladies who are either expecting or already have had children.

To put it in perspective, their school pictures would fill roughly six pages of their high school year book.

Why is it happening at Robeson?

"It can be a lot of things that are happening in the home or not happening in the home, if you will," Morrow said. Absentee fathers are another factor, he said.

LaDonna Denson and two other Robeson students say parents not talking to teens and, in some cases, the pursuit of public assistance also factor into the pregnancies. None of them thought they'd be moms at such a young age.

They said they have support at home. But not all girls do, they said. In fact, some girls get thrown out of the home.

Not on Morrow's turf. "We're not looking at them like 'Ooh you made a mistake,'" he said. "We're looking at how we can get them to the next phase, how can we still get them thinking about graduation?"

So there's help in a teen parent program. And coming soon, right across from Robeson, developers are turning a one-time crack house into a day care for student use. "We have to provide some type of environment for them and some form of support for them," Van Vincent, CEO of VLV Development, said.

It's all made an impression.

"Just cause you have a baby, that doesn't mean your life is over," one student said.

One thing they might not know about their principal: His mom had him when she was 15. That's why accepting the problem -- and working through it -- is so important to him

Did you see that thing on TV a while ago... not sure what program but it was about teenage girls who wanted to get pregnant because their friends got pregnant and they wanted to all have babies at the same time.... it was like "we all want matching bracelets" kinda concept.

Is that Peer Pressure? Or is that like when I was 13 and me and my best friend had matching clothes and BFF necklaces. What is that?

My wife is a FACS supervisor at a south suburban HS district with 4 HSs. 8 in one school doesn't sound like it's all that much from the stories I hear at her schools. Of course, that doesn't make it ok...

edit: I just texted her and asked how many pregnant students are in her district. She says at least 50, probably less than 75. Divided over 4 schools. These are pretty big schools though. I don't know the exact sizes.

1 in 8 girls, not 8 in the school. that means if there are 800 girls 100 of them are prego!

That's bullshit! They can make the boys wear rubbers or take birth control. They just chose not to for whatever reason.

They are so desperate for any type of love or affection the only way they know how to get it is to have a baby that will give it to them.

I'm definately not surprised, do you see how the kids dress these days? And how parents are more protective of their kids trying to shield them from the world, when it only makes it worse. It's a growing epidemic.

Most likely it's because kids don't even know what they are. Parents aren't talking to their kids about sex because their kids are innocent and would never do something like that. Parents shield their kids more these days vs back in the days. Give kids more responsibilities instead of parents doing everything for them. Kids are to babied.

Yes, a baby that they can then treat the way they were treated....the cycle can then repeat itself, only on an increasingly larger level. Sad and scary all at the same time. In my mind, the question is how to break the cycle. I believe that it has to start at home with the parents. Unfortunately, self-responsiblity is sorely lacking in today's culture.

My wife taught these kinds (child development, early child, independent living, etc) of classes at a pretty high-income/privileged kid high school about 10 years ago. She was shocked at the amount of girls that wanted a baby. One of the girls they knew in HS with them got pregnant, and some of the girls were all like, "Oh, she's so lucky. She'll be such a good mom. She's been with ____ (guy) for a while now."

It's like the twilight zone. It knows no socioeconomic boundaries.

Most of the curriculum for these types of classes is geared toward scaring teenage girls into thinking it's not all fun and games. Some of them still don't get it. They think kids are like puppies or something. Birthing videos, "real baby" dolls, etc just aren't working. There's only so much educators can do too.

I am gonna agree with this. It is not a matter of education. Let's face it by 8th grade all kids know how babies are made.
It is the unconditional love they strive for, they cannot get it from anyone and have a shit family life so they create it. Unfortunately at this age they are not thinking long term and how this affects their future, parents, etc.
Like Mike said, birth control is not rocket science.
