quality online jewelery stores for semi precious stones?

I would like to buy my wife some earrings, and need a few suggestions for websites to shop that I know are going to get me decent stuff. I know about blue nile, but I am not looking for diamonds. I am looking for semi precious stones (Sapphire specifically)

suggestions?

Go to Baily Banks and Biddle, they are all going out of business and have some decent deals right now.

Long time ago in a galaxy far far away I had a good luck with antique jewelry mall. Bought stuff there more than once and never had a problem.

Do not buy a semi-precious stone that you can not visually inspect first hand. One of the most important factors of them (color) does not always hold true to a picture.

Sapphires in particular come in many many varying degrees of color and tints and a shift in that can mean what you think is worth X be only worth 1/5-X. Also, you could wind up with something that is mounted like crap and come loose and fall out; a very easy flaw to spot upon a visual inspection of the real thing in your hand.

I could easily photograph a light sapphire with a dark background to make it appear deeper in color than it actually is (commanding a higher price), but you'll be pretty pissed off when you see it in person and tell someone how much you paid for it....

That's not to say every transaction will have these problems, but these are the very basic risks you run (as well as others) with jewelry online, especially from some website you never heard of...

*THIS*

Go there and anyplace else you find... There's beautiful stuff all around... you'll know it when you see it... but you have to see it first-hand.

i never thought about that. I don't know alot about semi precious stones, so I appreciate the advice. To be honest, I owuldn't know what I was buying in the first place.

I was at Jared a week or so ago, and I get this sleazy used car salesmen feeling from them.

I am going to check out baily and banks because it is so close to the house.

thanks again

I'm not sure how they are for stones other then diamonds, but this place is in the top 1% if you are shopping online: http://www.goodoldgold.com/ If they carry sapphires, this is where I'd get them.

Hey Chris, Eva works at Rogers & Hollands in Woodfield Mall. Not sure what they have for Sapphires but it's worth a call.

I've picked up some pieces from the Fox Valley store over the past decade. There were always some decent 'gems' in their offerings.

Spend the time putting some thought into who she is and what would suit her with a personalized touch... does she have similar things for them to go with? Does she have a nice outfit she likes to wear that they would compliment nicely?... etc..

I bought her a sapphire and diamond ring last year. she has asked for these earrings for a while now. her dad gave her earrings for her 16th birthday, and her dad passed away shortly after her 17th birthday to cancer. About 18 months ago she lost one of the earrings. So I am trying not to replace the earrings (but to find something similar)

This is excellent advice as well.
