Gunman opens fire in S. Side business

Tribune staff reports
Published August 27, 2003, 10:32 AM CDT

As many as six people were injured this morning when a man, possibly a disgruntled co-worker, opened fire with a gun in an industrial building in the South Side neighborhood of Canaryville.

The alleged gunman was taken into custody at Windy City Core Supply Inc., on the 3900 block of South Wallace Avenue, after police arrived at the scene. The suspect was wounded in the incident, CLTV reported.

Individuals were seen being wheeled away on stretchers and placed in an ambulance. At least two people have been taken to area hospitals, police said.

Details on any injuries were not immediately available.

Authorities got a call about 8:45 a.m. that a person had been shot inside the building, possibly by a co-worker, according to Chicago police spokesman Pat Camden. All buildings within a block of the scene were being evacuated by police

Like I've said all along, everyone would be much more polite and accomodating to their fellow man/woman if they knew that everyone in the room was packing.

Now things have changed from 6 being injured to:

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A gunman described as a disgruntled employee of an auto parts supply warehouse shot six people to death on Wednesday before he was killed either by police or his own hand, authorities said.

Police tried to negotiate by telephone with the gunman but he "wanted no part of it" and police stormed the South Side facility, Windy City Core Supply Inc., where the shootings occurred, said police spokesman Pat Camden.

The gunman, whose name was not released, "is a disgruntled employee who either had been terminated or was going to be terminated," Camden said.

A spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed that seven people had died in the shootings.

It was not clear whether the gunman was killed by police or turned his weapon on himself.

Witnesses reported hearing at least two flurries of gunshots. Police deployed snipers on nearby rooftops and evacuated the surrounding area.

Last week in Ohio, an automotive supply plant worker killed one co-worker and wounded two others before killing himself.

Other workplace shootings in recent years include in November 1999, when a copier repairman in Honolulu shot to death seven people at a Xerox Corp. facility. In July of that year, a stock trader killed nine people at two Atlanta brokerage offices and later committed suicide.

In February 2001, a former worker at a suburban Chicago Navistar plant who was about to start a prison term returned to the plant and opened fire, killing four.
