"Undeliverable" emails - anyone else getting swamped?

For the last week or so I've been getting tons of "Delivery failure notice" emails on my AOL account. I've been keeping my Windows XP and my Norton anti-virus up-to-date and running anti-virus scans and nothing has shown up. The emials appear to be bouncing off of servers that are not in my address books.

By process of elimination I am guessing that some computers that have my email address in their address books may have gotten infected with some virus/worm and are sending out emails with a "Reply to" as the email address in their address book.

Anyone else getting these? Any ideas? (VCook, you work in security, right?)

Oh, and it did not start after I opened an unfamiliar email.

yeah somebody has a virus on their computer. you might be in their address book and it's trying to send out emails pretending to be you. nothing that you can do about it except try and see which of your bonehead friends are infected and tell them to fix their computer. they might not even know they're infected

My guess is that the "boneheads" may not be any of my friends or associates, but those spammers that want to send me all this free viagra when I refinance my mortgage and lose 50 lbs......

Actually.... it probably is someone you know. One of the virus's that was running around last week would send emails containing the virus. The virus would pick somebody from the infected computers address book and make it look like that person was sending the email.

I got quite a few last week.... not too much this week though.

You might not have the virus, but everyone else does, and it's clogging up mail servers everywhere... Mail gets constipated in there, and they time out, thus returning to you as undeliverable...
