Looking to redo the floors in the family room in our basement. Thought about laminate, but the better stuff is about $3 for square foot. My floor guy says he can get me hardwood for that price. I know the typical water/moisture drawbacks, anything else that should make me not go the hardwood way? How much of a difference will 12mm laminate make over the cheaper 8mm?
If flooding or water entering your basement has any remote chance of happening, forget wood or carpet. Period!
I did my man-cave with ceramic tile. Looks very clean and a bit on the luxury side. Easy to maintain but more expensive. It's cold to walk-on barefooted but better than taking a chance and having to live with mold/smelly carpet or wood IMO.
My Uncle is a bonded handi man and does tile (he did my basement) and everybody that see's it is impressed. Let me know if you want his contact information.
I'm a fan of tile, but not walking on it without shoes (unless you run floor heating which is just pimp) I just replaced my basement with good berber and a thick pad, and I love it. Looks good, feels good, smells good, and as said, easy to rip up.
I found some pics on my basement...
My Bro built and installed shutter access doors to all water meter, sump pump, and crawl space areas. Trim and baseboard + had a neighbor who sold fireplaces so we bought a couple and installed one in the basement and another in the living room.
