Computer Issue

I have a Dell Studio Desktop w/an Intel Core2 Quad processor.

Lately there has been this sound, like opening a program, then closing a program, every 10 seconds or so. When it's doing this, my computer lags and it's very slow and "delayed" to my imputs. Very annoying!!

I have restarted it many times and 90% of the time it just keeps happening.

Any help with this would be great.

Mike

Could be a virus, could be some spyware running in the background. Do you have some form of Spybot AND anti virus? Run those. Get rKill.exe and Malwarebytes if you can. Those can run and check for lot of stuff on a comp

Best case it just sounds like some annoying virus
Worst case it could be running a program that logs keystrokes, passwords, etc, and passes them back to the hacker who wrote it

Also a helpful thing is to do the CTRL+ALT+DEL and start Task Manager and see if there is a program running with a wierdo name, taking up a buttload of CPU power...but not sure how well versed you are at looking at Windows Task Manager....

HTH

I forgot to say I have Norton Security Suite. I checked Task Manager and no other programs are running. I'll check for Spyware.

I tried all the stuff mentioned above and nothing fixed it. I have no spyware or viruses. It's like it freezes the computer for about 8 seconds between the sounds.

Any other suggestions?

Replace your mouse/keyboard. What USB devices did you and do you have attached to this computer?

I'm running W7 Home Premium. The sound actually is the sound I hear when I plug in a USB thumb drive, (no thumb drives connected when thiis happens) and delays between one of the sounds, but not the other. My USB connections are my mouse, keyboard, and printer, and webcam.

Go into power save options and disable/turn off anything about putting ports or drives to sleep due to inactivity.

I say start by replacing your mouse and/or uninstall and reinstall all USB devices.

I disconnected all the USB cables, restarted the computer, then plugged them all in one by one. Windows had to reload the drivers for the web cam so I am guessing that was the culprit. It's running fine now.

Thanks everyone for your help!
