iPhone and Chase Bank

The Chase Bank app can now deposit a check using the iPhone. This is pretty cool.

http://www.newsden.net/deposit-your-...hone-app-1607/

Deposit your checks via Chase Bank iPhone app

Good news for all those Chase Bank customers, now you can save a trip to the ATM and deposit your checks from home using the iPhone application called ‘Chase’. Just select your account, enter the amount on the checks and take a picture of the front and back of the check to initiate a deposit.

The technology isn’t new, as USAA (a privately-held bank and insurance company) added the functionality to its app last year. Chase has also added Person-to-Person QuickPay to the app to support payment to anyone; you only have to enter his e-mail address.

For now, there are some limitations regarding deposit amounts, and customers are only able to deposit $1,000 per day and $3,000 per week using the application. But still the app is cool, and it supports a convenient way to quickly deposit personal checks without having to make a trip to the bank. Here’s hoping for more banks to follow this suit.

The next morning we got an email and it showed already. I was amazed when the camera picked up the routing number from the other bank it was coming from. It will tell you to hold on to the checks until it shows in your account then destroy them.

how? you have to take a picture of the check and there is a hold on the check just like depositing the check into an ATM.

this works great because sadly my wife's company doesn't have direct deposit yet and she hates going to the bank on her lunch. So now when she gets her check on pay day and they see her doing this with her iPhone and ask what she's doing shes going to tell them "well since you won't get direct deposit, I'll just deposit my check this way".

Authenticity of said check in the picture is never really verified....only funds in the account it thinks it 'sees' are... (and even then, they'll be glad to overdraft the account, especially if it's a Chase account you are drawing from)

Figure out the rest...

Don't worry though, this 'feature' has been causing a lot of grief for people who've been victims of bank fraud against their previously 'closed' accounts... so you'll not be alone if it happens to you. Good luck dealing with it though.

How's that any different than using a Chase ATM to deposit a check?

this "feature" is only been around for a while by 1 other bank (USAA) so how much grief can it cause so far?

They have the physical check on hand and 'could' do an investigative followup on genuine/fraudulent if they wanted/needed to.

The app itself isn't the problem, it's the underlying 'mechanism/process' it's leveraging in the industry that's the real problem... There's a hole you can drive a truck through and they make more things use it but still leave the holes wide open.

Per previous post and the process it uses, it's caused someone I know who is a SBO $30K of grief when someone decided to ding his closed account (unauthorized) for that amount over a year ago... and a certain bank honored it (on a closed account, mind you) and has done nothing but harass him because they say he owes money into that closed account to true it up.

Fuck Chase.

They wouldn't let me cash a Chase issued check because I didn't have a drivers license. I had a state ID, but somehow, that wasn't good enough. I even asked them (hypothetically), what if I'm not able to drive do to an illness. Does that mean I can never cash a check here? They said that would be True - No Drivers License, No Checks Cashed.

I closed my account and move to another bank that day.

I love this board - You could post up that you were just given $1M tax free and you would get responses like:

1. Fuck that, you should have got $2M
2. I had a buddy who got $1M and he got fucked because....
3. Here is what i would have done if I had that $1M
4. Money is the root of all evil and you will suffer from this $1M

Yep, watch till somebody puts a stop pay on that $1000 check saying it was fake/stolen, and by the time chase responds the check is destroyed

It will be even more fun than long time (and still current) 'problem' of the banks that only update their network facing balances once every X hours.. allowing someone to pilfer more cash than the account has in it over and over again via ATMs and 'reproduced' cards.
