tomtom is the best
i think i have a coupon or it's on sale right now (got an email from them the other day)
it is huge - but it downloads all the maps to your phone so you don't need data (which is really good in the mountains but even good here as I often ended up driving around on a grid

MotionX costs I think 25$ a year for turn by turn - otherwise it does less than google maps

Last edited by iamnotgreg; 08-06-2010 at 10:18 AM. Reason: it's 25 not 35 a year

Yes, the one you link to above.

Greg, you're insane. MotionX is much better than Google Maps....How much time do you have with MotionX? It's live traffic data and maps. I've used it to travel all over the USA and it's worked great for a truckload less money than the tomtom software...

Google Maps has traffic data and I've gotten pretty good at following the little blue dot.

I paid 29$ for the tomtom app
MotionX is 25$ a year

Oh and having the maps downloaded to the device is a big plus when traveling - we used it down in NC/TN last week and I would be without signal or reliable data for large stretches - sometimes the wifes vzn phone was even out of signal (shock awe)

now admittedly that 29 is a one time fee - so that's a plus - but they sell traffic sep.

works for me though.. thus far the only times I have needed traffic I just popped google up - when I need a GPS generally I am in the middle of nowhere

And the tom tom app requires no additional per year fees? Are you at all concerned that you've only purchased the maps as they are today and that they don't update unless you pay again?

They updated the maps either once or twice since I have had it
It was free
I bought it in May (mothers day sale)

I think they are handling the updates differently on the iphone as they got so much resistance early on due to the pricing being so high / it was on par with a standalone in the beginning

Last I checked they charge you a nominal fee for traffic information (optional).

Maps rarely change. I update the app once a year for free.

oh and fwiw I really have no vested stake in either - but I will say in my exp I had difficulty with MotionX when in the demo period.. My problem was I was up north in Wisconsin and we had patchy signal... Trying to find the lodge my Dad was staying at was a pita when the GPS just shows you driving around on a grid.

It annoys me a bit that the tomtom app eats up over a gig of space - but that does make it useful when you need it.

I have learned not to trust having a usable data signal on the ATT network

Until I had saw it on sale I was going to just buy another standalone GPS ( I had one of the earlier top of the line tomtoms before one of my neighbors broke my window and took it and my iphone chargers from the glove box) f*ckers.

I do like having it all in one thing - I have enough crap to carry around everywhere I go it seems

me either, really. I just like the motion x because you can pay as you go. it's $3 a month and if you don't use it you don't pay for it. I like to be able to use it when i need it. I'm with you on the all in one stuff. I'm almost at a point where I don't use my laptop any more too...

i figured I'd end up "trying" it for 3 bucks a month
then forgetting about it and by 2 years I'd have paid over 70 bucks for it.

with tomtom you can put it on as many phones as you wish (assuming you have multiple iphones you support) and it moves from handset to handset when you upgrade -- but i guess that's the same for either

I didn't know mapquest had a free turn by turn one thats good to know
