upgraded to 4.0.1 and now

my iphone 3gs keeps entering safe mode. Reinstalled 4..0.1 twice and the second time it worked for a bit, then I downloaded a theme and back to safe mode, when I delete the theme it still stays in safe mode. I installed crash reporter and I think its telling me that springboard is the culprit,

now what?

do I go back to 3.1.2 (my previous version) and say the hell with 4.0.1

Yes. Thats where the problem is. Phone works fine on 4.0.1, after jailbreaking, phone worked fine, then installed a theme and safe mode, deleted theme, (which was the only thing I installed from cydia), still safe mode

Its probably the program you're using to apply the theme that's at fault.
It may not be compatible with 4.x.

yep. you can't easily go back to 3.x.x I agree with Gin3. It's probably the program that's installing the theme

sure you can if your file is stored on the server. mine is. All of my OS are stored on cydia server. I'd just dont want to have to do that

Evo works mighty nice with 2.2

4.0.1 slowed my iphone to the point of leaving it in the dust. Free bump - good luck with the problem.

I know this sounds simplistic and stupid, but when you reinstalled 4.0.1 did you kill your AV software first?

I don't know about Iphones, but the touch did nearly the same thing. I had to shutdown all AV software on the computer, reinstall and it was flawless after that.

Reinstall 4.0.1 and don't bother with the themes.

Sometimes even if you uninstall an app, it wont revert the changes it made to the OS. Especially if it requires root access (jailbreak).

this is what i did and it worked great until I installed the theme. I think I will try this again - the theme and see how stable it is. It seems like this is the issue, where even though I've deleted it is still hanging around

OK here is the scoop.
If you dont have SHSH on files in Cydia your fucked.
load tinyumbrella and check if you can download blobs for 4.0.1 or earlier 4.0 or 3.1.2 from cydia.( all depends on which version you did JB)
The best way is to reload all OS and rejailbrake again. DON'T I say DON'T update to 4.0.2 because there is no JB for it.
check www.sinfuliphone.com
great webside for JB apps and shit.

i have a feeling this transition is not gonna be very smooth. I know I have a bunch of cydia apps that probably are not gonna work, or I'm gonna have to find the updated versions

You have 3 choices.

Remove the jailbreak permantly

go back to a NON 4.0 software if u must have jailbreak.

Upgrade your phone to 3gs or new phone.

There is zero work around. I put off upgrading to 4.0 because it slows down all apps and has been reported as such on all 3.0 phones. No other work arounds can be done. If u want to keep your phone, backtrack to the old 3.x software.

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

Like you said you have 3.1.2 SHSH on file so go back to 3.1.2 and BlackRa1n that phone again.

i ended up going back to 3.1.3. This required the use of Terminal (or cmd for you windows peep) to get the phone out of its infinate boot loop. Once that was done, fired up Spirit, restored from backup, restored from aptbackup to get all of my jb stuff back, and now everything is right with the world again, and..... I now have an unthethered phone. Yeah is me
