I am creating this thread on a Mac

Wow... This is strange.
Lived my life on a computer for the last.. 10.. 15 years and I feel like I have no idea what I am doing all over again.

Not so much bad and getting around but it is kind of refreshingly different. Like losing your virginity all over again I guess for both of us. This thing is brand new too.

Well. That is all. Looks like Mopar beat me to the thread i just saw his below mine when I started creating this.

Oh and this thing is remarkably snappier than you would think it would be for what it is - Macbook Air 13" - 1.86ghz with 128gb SSD - only thing I did upgrade was the memory to 4gb

Fires itunes up in around 0.5 seconds - it's pretty amazing.

Guess I will take it home and play with it a bit now.
Kind of excited to learn something new.

RDP or VPN clients take care of that issue. Can run an old garbage notebook or netbook with a good inet connection and you're all set.

Honestly, I really have no need for a notebook any more even though I own two... work pays for them so no cost to me. I remote in once in awhile when on my pool deck in the summer but other than that I prefer my desktop.

Arch, I never said they were not.

Mike, as I mentioned in mopars post.. if you want that thing to really fly install a SSD drive. Prices are coming down on them big time.

I have a 3.5" SSD drive in my work desktop... programs and boot time increased a good amount.

Macs are worth every penny.
Yes, they do the same thing as PCs. BUT in a way that's more efficient, simple, powerful and reliable, all at the same time.
For me, these characteristics trump the premium price.

Congrats Greg.

I have often wondered the same thing - a mac is a personal computer. It was one of the first back when IBM were very expensive the mac was (believe it or not) cheap.

Then came the clones

I think I still have an IBM PC Jr in a storage locker somewhere

Yeah? Please explain how in detail... I'd love to hear this one.

I can just about buy two notebooks for the price of one apple. Apple wants a base price of $1799 for a 2.4ghz i5 with a 320gb hd and 4gb ram mac book pro.

I paid nowhere near that for this. Granted it's not very cpu powerful - it does have an ssd disk which helps boot/standby return time - it also seems to load apps absolutely instantly.

Thus far I am rather impressed with it.

If I really need juice for say.. HD video rendering - I manage a render farm at work.. So technically I could "borrow" that overnight

I guess it has to be a debate - otherwise it will be two or three "dude cool" posts and done. This place needs debate or the work day just crawls by

Mopar can you fit two drives in that thing or just one?
(guessing just one)

My plan for this was to just buy the smaller SSD and then grab a 1tb little passport or other usb disk and keep that for the photos/mp3/videos.

Even the 256gb wouldn't hold them all, and there is no point keeping so many static and rarely touched files that don't matter if they are on fast disk.. on ssd. Just a waste. I probably have 1.5tb I *could* carry around, but I have a home server for that.. This is just a small laptop to surf the web on.. maybe play with imovie.. take to the track.. etc

It has a long battery life and pops out of standby really quickly. I think it will fill those needs rather well. *hope so at least*

btw. I agree on the apple being pigheaded part. THey give the consumer what they say the consumer wants. Sometimes it almost feels like they are just trying to prove a point

iamnotgreg, I'm not dissing your machine by any means...congrats for you if it does what you need.

But, as for this whole Apple vs. PC that is a never ending discussion here or even on the net.

This is a very simple subject that people get confused with.

1) Apple makes a machine with a OS.

2) Dell, HP, IBM..etc, etc, etc build a machine with NO OS.

Both build a MACHINE that for the most part are the SAME DAMN THING.

Anyone want to debate that? They use the SAME Intel Procs, they use the SAME video manufactors, SAME HD companies...etc,etc,etc.

So, what this really comes down to is OS. The PC guys mainly use Windows version X and the MAC guys use OSX. So when any of you PC bashing guys are talking you should just say you think OSX is kick ass and everything else sucks.... Which I totally disagree with. I run about 4 different OS's on my PC. Each one has pro's and cons. I'll say that just about every unix box I've run has been ROCK solid with no viruses...etc, all the apple hype.

And I'll ask this question.. if every mainstream application company can run on MAC or PC...what makes one better than the other?

Mike by trade I am a PC admin - servers/network/telephony.. all of it. Mostly windows but linux and unix in the past - I also know and use some of the others (Ontap/VMware etc.. which admittedly are mostly unix based)

Basically this is an experiment for me. I really liked the iphone. I have always hated Macs (basically because I usually ended up having to support 2 or 3 of them.. I never used them or knew how to use them.. and those 2 or 3 users tended to be the biggest pita users I would have ((say out of a 500-600 seat house))

I have become so bored with the same old same old. I am honestly still running xp and server 2003 on basically everything. Our main software provider did about a quarter ass job of supporting vista.. so we (and i think everyone else) skipped it. Now 7 is out.. I will be finally building out some 7 x64 quad or maybe 8 core boxes for my rendering guys soon... So I will get to play with that on some fast hardware first.. but I wanted to try something new for myself. Kind of hoping this would spark interest in a field that to be honest I have gotten really bored with. I was really excited to get one and I jhave been talking about it for over a year.. Figured if I really wanted it that bad I should do it. If it actually gets me interested in my job again it's worth it's price x10. A long time ago I remember just going to Barnes and Nobles and sitting there for hours reading Unix Unleashed and other books like that in the coffee shop. Haven't done anything like that in probably a decade.

I already find myself on amazon.com... looking at books... Maybe I'll start with the For Dummies stuff

Side note - fit/finish and engineering wise? This thing is amazing.
Really compared to most laptops I have had - this is like a Maserati sitting next to a Trans Am - the TA has a bigger motor and a lot more HP - but the Maserati completely has it from a form/fit/finish aspect.

Performance wise - Like I said before - no complaints so far. Would I want it for a rendering box for stills or video? No.. But I imagine I can still dump my gopro hd videos in it before I go to bed and will wake up with them finished

built a vmware box at work ... maybe a year ago...
basically it just hums along. that said I haven't "bought" a server since.
Filled all the low hanging fruit onto it and.. let it hum.

Honestly the single virtual desktop on it uses ten times the resources of all the servers on it combined. Minesweeper must be a real resource hog (it's the receptionists machine)

(guessing just one)
just the one, this thing is way too small (only 14") to be able to squeeze 2 in here. my 17" hp however, you can get 2 drives in. thought about building it up to a 2T laptop, but the thing is already over 8lbs.

I went with the 640gig drive only for the RPMs 7500vs5400.. they offered a 1T but at a slower rpm, and i have a small 1T external HD, so i really didn't need all that storage. I have a lot of movies, and i'm getting more and more blue-ray copies as well, so i need the space.

And I'll ask this question.. if every mainstream application company can run on MAC or PC...what makes one better than the other?
thats a huge reason i could not step into a Apple. As far as specs wise, my new laptop blows the most optioned out MacbookPro. And for 75% of the cost? why not. but for me the other no-go was my work software, it will not run on a Apple, its a program that i can stream constant data from a vehicle. the program doesn't support mac, and getting it to run in parallels i have been told makes the little macbooks head explode.
