Boxee is twice the price of ATV, and depending on what he wants it might be overkill. He still hasn't said what he wants to do.

Yeah but I assume he wants to do you know stuff - not just buy tv shows from itunes.

maybe he just wants slick apps and support for netflix. I'm not an apple fan boy but the ATV does fit a certain market segment.

It was released yesterday! If he wants to play his personal content, and play it well then ATV is out of the mix. Boxee is the easy choice.

Nothing but HDMI.. Crap. I bought my receiver shortly before hdmi came out. [email protected]#[email protected]#
(Denon 3805)

I can run the video right into the tv and the audio through the amp - but i think that will make it too complicated for the mother in law and I had hoped this would be a good system for keeping all of Keira's little education dvd's from getting used/scratched

if you're just looking for something to play back a bunch of kids educational DVDs then the boxee is WAY overkill. Just get a cheap streamer for that. Something like this would cover your needs.

I'm hoping people disappointed with the popbox will sell off their units used for under $50. For $40 they're totally worth it.

oh no.. not just - that's to be one of the uses, as she keeps scratching up her dvd's

I will also use it as will the wife for watching whatever else. I just considered that a nice bonus

See and Boxee is even overkill isnt it? I mean for $100 i figured webtv/appletv has the streaming option. My thing is i ditched cable 6 months ago (one of the best things ive ever done btw) and there are a few shows I watch that i can download. But watching on lappy sucks so I just need a simple box that I can run hdmi to my tv and bam.

pay 199 for boxee and stream from anything and everything from everywhere or pay 100$ for the apple product and pay 3$ an episode or around 60$ a year to watch each show?
CapX or OpX? I think I will take CapX if we are talking a 100 or 200$ device - especially if the 200$ device does 3x as much.

You just want the apple product and are looking for justification aren't you?

And playback of your own library is limited with the ATV.

the final word on boxee is yet to be determined though. The software is based on XBMC which is good, but the final verdict isn't in yet since it was just released to the public. It has some awesome potential though.
