Dude me too - WTF does it do and why should I do it? - I am on 2.1 and the phone says I am up to date?

Everything you need to know, can be found in my signature.

Rooting will take lots of reading, since you'll have you maintain your phone from here on out. Primarily, you will no longer be able to take OTA official releases, as they almost always break root. Instead, you'll have to wait (usually only a day or three) for another hacker to crack the newest release to preserve root.

The main reason I have no interest in helping others directly to root, is because I'll then be on the hook to directly support whenever a new release comes out.

What do you REALLY get with it? - For a phone, email, text user with a Google search here and there, am I missing anything?

I use custom ROMs, which offer superior performance & battery life. Using Apps2SD, I am no longer limited by the amount of storage space on the phone to load up apps (I carry many games). And with a rooted phone, I can upgrade the radio software, which allows me to get even better coverage as they continue to improve firmware revisions.

Unrevoked has issues. Works most of the time but because their solution is "closed," it's much harder to troubleshoot as well.

Not an expert but I did root mine

Cyanogenmod is one of the 3rd party Roms (cyanogenmod.com)

It was something like 10 steps counting backups to get from where I was to the current 2.2 (back to a hackable version then forward to the current one.)
you have to be careful and pay attention as you can brick your phone.

here is their wiki page
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Main_Page
(find your model on top)

My phone is an older G1 which was running Android 1.5
This is how I was able to get the newer features available with Android 2.2

Its a little slow compared to the newer phones but I mostly use it for
calls /navigation (copilot live)/internet
Not sure i would bother if mine was one of the newer phones.

Good suggestion BUT...

Quote:
Incompatible with PERMANENT root option

Desire (requires nand unlock)
Desire HD (requires nand unlock)
Magic (unknown)
Evo (requires nand unlock)
G2 (requires nand unlock)
Archos 70 (unknown)
myTouch 3G (unknown)
Wildfire
Droid Incredible
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953

And it is unclear whether this works on Android 2.1 AND 2.2, but I haven't dug deeply into the thread.

Add to this, I got a faster SD memory card for my phone...so not only do I have tons of space from the SD, but better performance from the programs loading/running off the faster SD.

It's been so long since I rooted my phone, I don't even remember how to do it.
