XBMC is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub for digital media. XBMC is available for Linux, OSX, Windows, and the original Xbox. Created in 2003 by a group of like minded programmers, XBMC is a non-profit project run and developed by volunteers located around the world. More than 50 software developers have contributed to XBMC, and 100-plus translators have worked to expand its reach, making it available in more than 30 languages.

While XBMC functions very well as a standard media player application for your computer, it has been designed to be the perfect companion for your HTPC. Supporting an almost endless range of remote controls, and combined with its beautiful interface and powerful skinning engine, XBMC feels very natural to use from the couch and is the ideal solution for your home theater.

Currently XBMC can be used to play almost all popular audio and video formats around. It was designed for network playback, so you can stream your multimedia from anywhere in the house or directly from the internet using practically any protocol available. Use your media as-is: XBMC can play CDs and DVDs directly from the disk or image file, almost all popular archive formats from your hard drive, and even files inside ZIP and RAR archives. It will even scan all of your media and automatically create a personalized library complete with box covers, descriptions, and fanart. There are playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast feature and many audio visualizations. Once installed, your computer will become a fully functional multimedia jukebox.

Dude, this is huge news. I wish I had an appleTV2!! Time will tell how it handles higher bit rate 1080p content but I bet the next iterations (atv3?) will have the horsepower and will be jailbroken and have xbmc ported to it fast. VERY exciting news.

I did read, but without more detail it's hard to know why they had choppiness. Was it due to bit rate? Was it due to a specific codec? Was it due to how it was connected to the network? We need a real world test by some of the AVS junkies, run it through the battery of different file types and high bitrate materials. I wonder if it is handling the high def audio codecs.

Cook excuse my lack of audio knowledge....does the high rate audio stuff still feed through HDMI 1.3?

pretty sure it still goes thru HDMI.. its just if the apple tv processor can handle all that data.

the high def audio codecs are only available via HDMI(any version), there isn't enough bandwidth in optical or coaxial digital to carry the signal. You would also need a receiver capable of decoding those signals(DTS-MA, Dolby TrueHD). The question is not if the apple hardware can handle the data flow, the question is if it is even capable of outputting it either decoded or bitstreamed. Not all hardware is physically capable!

I'm still gathering details. Sounds like the processor should be capable of 1080p with no frame drops, might just be some tweaking of the software still ongoing. Still can't figure out if this is outputting 1080p or scaling it to 720p.

I stopped buying coffee except on the weekends. I just bought another popbox for the basement so I'm not going to be buying another streamer anytime soon. I'd like to see how it runs in person though. If they jailbreak the ATV3 fast and XBMC runs on that then it will be killer.

Official AVSforum thread on the topic, including links to the tutorials regarding jailbreaking and how to then install XBMC. Looks incredibly easy.

Just test out the biggest video files you have for starters. I used to have a bunch of high bitrate test videos but I lost the download links where I got them from. They're known troublesome files which really test the hardware and network capabilities.
