Google Comes Under Fire for 'Secret' Relationship with NSA:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/2011...ionshipwithnsa

The "Dont be Evil" quote actually came from Schmidt’s quote a while back saying: "It's Google’s job to ride the creepy line."

We all know that phone locations can be tracked. I don’t care that law enforcement can track phones by triangulation and GPS and listen to convo's. What bothers me is these Androids have an OSs and apps that have the ability to report data back to Google or the app writers. Google has very sophisticated algorithms that can tell just about everything about you. I am sure they catch what you surf, how long, what times, where you are, etc. They probably catch what you text and content of email too. It's been confirmed in prior news stories they are definitely reading gmail accounts.

There is actually a lawsuit against Apple right now for app privacy too. Yet another reason I am not big on the App phone revolution.

Well, there comes a price to use a free service, no? - Here, its the ENTIRE internet at your fingers, faster and easier to use - Man Hours go into that kind of work - Does it happen for free? - C'mon man. don't be so naive - NOTHING in the world is free, not even the internet (search engine, OS, etc etc) and if you don't like it, don't use it or buy it - No one has a gun to your head - Google would be STUPID not to capitalize on the user community they have - Trust me when I say that their "ways" have already helped to shape Google to what it is now - Yahoo? - C-Ya - Anything else out there? - NOPE

You have other choices, if you do not like what they do or how they do it, don't use it

At the end of the day, is it hurting me or my family that Google knows I go to YouPorn way to much as I suspect a few ex's have interesting new professions? - No - Does it hurt me or my family that I do the same on my Droid Phone? - No

Fuck it, who cares - The suns till shines - The Pigeons still shit and Obama still thinks he is making a positive impact - Google on muthauckahs and thank you for making shit easy for me - If that means my use of your stuff helps with this but comes at the cost of you knowing what I do, I don't care - I am not doing anything I am ashamed of

None of this surprises me; whether its coming from Google or a new start-up company.

I saw this coming, completely surprised Darren is the one to disclose it though.

yup I still have my google tracking device. It's like the iphone haters icrack.

Might be time to switch my phone to the phones I hate supporting, bb's.

First we get a socialist president which is retarded in how he handles the US economy, then we have the NSA gestapo, people haven't learned communism and big over bearing governments don't work from history. I already know how far the Feds Carnivore program can rip into our privacy first hand.

I'm thinking Rio de Jenero sounds pretty darn good, because our country is teetering off of what the founding fathers intended it to be with invasions of privacy, over taxation and too much bureaucratic bullshit.

I get your points and I get the op's point. I'm not doing anything illegal, at the moment.

Blindly following the rest of the sheep is how we let government/google have such control.

I still use my droid, but when the NSA/gov/google does make that overstep, guns will be out and I won't be a sheep and I will be gone.

Nothing to do with being a "sheep" - I am not forced to use Droid nor is it my only choice - If that were the case, this would have much more meaning to it

Not saying it is the only choice, what I'm saying is what they do with their data mining, privacy invasion, etc, is fine if they want to make money ~ big deal. If the government or anyone else MISUSES it, and it will happen or if someone hacks their data stores, there's going to be hell to pay.

But I'm also with you on the convenience which is why I haven't done anything yet.

end result: Whoever is playing god better tread lightly, because if they get too omnipotent for their britches there'll be an army ready to take them down a few pegs.

The bottom line is Google is a data collections company. I don’t care if it's apps are free. I don’t need Google to do anything for me. There are search engines galore. I have my own email & messengering servers, etc. I don’t have anything to hide either. Regardless there is no way in hell I'd run around with a GPS enabled phone that runs apps written by script kiddies, or runs the OS of the biggest and most successful data collections entity in the world. I don’t need Google to know where I am all day, what I was reading, knowledge of my communications, what my interests are, access to my email, etc. When governments start asking Google for help, alarm bells go off.

I am not saying it's a bad platform, the phones are nice. I am saying their stance on privacy is huge problem.

Dude, what kind of "Skelator" world do you live in man? - What kind of "activist" group will pose ANY threat to the US Gov't that has not already been done a quadrillion times?

Here is how is would go down:

Ready Army - "STOP tracking everything I do and violating my privacy"

Google Gov't - "Don't use our shit and we won't.......next question please..."

The 'cloud' is now more about the nebulous 'it doesn't matter what machine it's on and you'll never know because it doesn't matter' aspect of it. Footnoted with: "Oh, and BTW, we can change where it's running on the fly and you'll never know that either"

Everyone Exaggerates

Amen to that... The "Cloud" is the most overused consulting buzzword right now. I almost want to choke people when they use it. Now we have housewives talking about the "cloud" on TV. I think everyone in IT is laughing; the cloud and managed services have been around ever since Al Gore invented the Internet.

The cloud was an inside joke between Darren and I because some IT consultant sat next to my companies CEO on the flight back from Las Vegas and was bragging up the cloud as being the future.

I got a few giggles to day when I walked the controller through everything Darren and I have done for our network lately, she was impressed and her and our FA are currently testing my gigawhat.
