Microsoft Security Essentials

Anybody using it?

Free, and has got some pretty good ratings among the top antivirus programs....

Thoughts? My Mcafee is about to expire.

Yea giving microsoft to much credit in the security department concerns me But all I'm using it for would be home/school use nothing really more. And it seems to be getting a pretty solid response.

And my Mcafee was free with the purchase of my laptop so I just ran with it for the last year with pretty much no problems

Re: Microsoft Security Essentials

I've been using it for over a year and I also put this on all the computers I build and fix for people and I haven't once had any virus or spyware problems. I highly recommend it. It will also actually delete the virus if it finds one as well. Never had that experience with norton or mcafee. They usually find them and rarely delete them completly. Give it a shot bro, you won't be dissapointed.

Who is your Internet service provider? All the major ones give you Norton or Mcafee for free. Most schools do this as well.

Are you being a dope? LMAO

Come to think about it, i believe that bank of America and state farm do as well.

Comcast, but I'm looking for something different then Mcafee and norton for some reason the way it runs annoys the shit out of me. Seems like EVERYTIME it's doing something, it's gotta be ALL UP IN YOUR GRILL about it!

I use it, is is seamless compared to other anti virus that I have used.

No issues so far and it has intercepted a few viruses.

I have MSSE on one machine. Still deciding if I like it. It missed a rouge installer from a website last week that AVG caught.

MSSE will work with SSL connections to POP servers (see below) but it slows down the filtering of new mail since it scans them after they are decrypted.

The other machines all use AVG Free version, and I have two complaints about it:
It gobbles up CPU when it's scanning the whole system. The new version (2011) seems to be better about being less of a CPU hog than V8 or V9.

It won't support SSL connections to email (pop) servers. I ended up disabling the email scanner as a result.

Craig

I have been using it for about a year now and it works well. No virus and it does not bog down the computer speed like many others. Of course some spyware does slip through but that is what spybot seek and destroy is for. Nothing is foolproof.

I dont understand this negatvity about microsoft trying to secure their shit and how you guys have it in your mind that they cant do it.

Example, Microsoft hires or buys out the guys who develop other antiVirii packages and then slaps their name on it but you guys still shoot it down.

In the end I still think your a tard if you get a virus. (99% of virus issues are PEBCAK, some just cant resist the title "midget donkey thousand island dressing porn")

Not to bad considering it is free. It's updated frequently. It's definitely better then nothing at all.

Nah, I haven't touched my laptop in a few days... Finals week at school been all kinds of distracted. But I'll probably do it this weekend sometime.

My Mcafee has gotta be REMOVED correct? Even if it is expired the program still will remain.

Yeah, when it expires you typically just don't get updates.

FWIW I use AVG and have for years at this point. McAfee has an ok enterprise virus scanning application but the person version has become quite bloated.

Yes remove mcgarbage and any spyware programs you have. Just solely run security essentials by itself and you won't look back. Make sure its set to do a full system scan once a week and allow it to update and your set.
