Major Laptop Issues

Well, I'm not sure if that's it for this laptop of ours or what, but this thing just keeps on completely freezing. I mean 100% other than being able to move the cursor around. Can't minimize windows, close things or even pull up the task manager with ctl-alt-delete.

Thoughts? I know it's not something easily diagnosable over the internet...we're already thinking about getting something new.

It's a Dell somethin' or other, just 3 years old. What do you recommend for cheap new laptops?

I would reimage it before I decided the hardware was the problem. Most likely the OS or some application on it is the problem.

Can you do a system restore back to a date where you weren't having this problem? Or is the system completely unusable even in safe mode?

If you ain't with us, then it's just bad news.

Dunno yet, I'm not home. Vicki just said she ran a clean/reboot and it detected an error, said there was something stopping it from rebooting...it ran a bunch of self scans...worked for 5 mins and froze again.

I'll call in a sec

Sounds like an overheating issue.

Clean the thing out? Did an internal cooling fan die? Are the vents chock full of dust?

Before you do anything to try to fix it. Press F12 during startup until you get to the boot menu. Select Dell Diagostics and run it.

^^I'll check those things when I get home...I'll try cleaning it out, but it doesn't sit much. I suppose it could still be an issue.

Once you get it to boot, you can do a CTL-ALT-DEL and select Task Manager.

Click on the PROCESSES tab and see what is gobbling up your processor time. There is a display column for % of processor used. If it's a program see which one it is. If the processor is 30% or more free (noted at the bottom of the page (windows Idle), then see if your HDD light is lit steadily.

If it's a HDD issue, try defragging it, or it may be very close to full.

That at least might give us a chance to be internet experts.

While it's still running backup up all your data to a USB External Drive / Fob.

From the command prompt run a chkdsk -r (Note if it detects hard drive problems), Make sure you are not overheating it...Sitting in bed or on the couch with it on a comforter or something is not good. Consider an OS\app reinstall with the latest drivers.

If it's hardware it could be anything: Bad stick of RAM/Motherboard/ or failing hard drive.

Sounds like the machine ran an automatic chkdsk and repaired itself..That means a hard disk problem. Either it got jarred and corrupted a system file or it's failing...

Dont get a Mac unless you are running low on tiolet paper.

It got really bad last night...two blues screens and two more complete lock ups in a matter of 20 mins. I was trying to wrap something up on it and finally just quit and went to bed.

I'll delve into everything tonight, but there's something really wrong with the thing.

Jon what am I looking for when I run a diagnostics check on the machine?

My first test would be MemTest. Hop over here to get a copy - it's free.

http://www.memtest.org/

You'll need to get this onto a bootable USB key or burn the ISO to a CD to boot from.

Running this will accomplish two things.

1. It'll check your RAM and eliminate that as a possible culprit.
2. It'll take Windows out of the equation.

If you crash while running MemTest, you have a heat or hardware issue. If MemTest runs happily for 15-25 minutes without a crash, your RAM is good and heat most likely is not a culprit.

Ya, but I think you need to have a bone through your nose and a grass skirt to say "Ubuntu"

Guys its only a few years old, it shouldn't be having all these problems, maybe you should just take it back to the manufactures local store front and have their guys swap it out for a new one, and migrate all your data for you. Oh wait, you don't have a mac. carry on.

It sounds like a malware problem. Get a copy of malwarebytes anti malware. Install and run. Clean anything it finds. Then get a copy of CCleaner. Install and run. Do the registry analysis any fix anything it finds.

Both programs are free on the internet. Put them on a usb drive and move them to the infected machine.

If this doesn't work, lemme know....

It runs a memory test. No need to install a 3rd party app for this. Dell includes it on their PCs. It will tell you it passed or it will start beeping displaying a code. Your issue sounds like a mem problem to me. The reason i say run this first is I would hate to see you format and reload when it didn't need it in the first place.

Next I would run chkdsk, be sure to run chkdsk /f. The /f fixes any errors it finds.

Haha, I ran it last night, went to get ready for bed...came out of the bathroom and Vicki was bitching that the computer was beeping in the living room and she just clicked through a bunch of stuff. WHAT!? She didn't realize what I was doing...I just shut it down.

Ok, so if it was beeping what does that mean the next step is?

It means your mem or motherboard are bad. The Dell Diagnostics will display an error code and play a sequence of beeps. Note the error code and the sequence of beeps.
