Wireless 3G Internet Recommendations & Issues?

I've got a family member living in a rural area at the moment with no cable internet available and so he's looking at going to 3G for his laptop internet needs (I guess it's a USB card, I'm new to this kind of service). I've got two questions:

1. What do you guys recommend for this type of service?

2. He's having some problems loading the necessary software on his laptop needed to connect (trial run to set his laptop up for this type of service).

-when he tries to install, he gets "error 2738"; could not access VBscript run time for custom action.

He said he's tried unregistering the vbscript.dll and jscript.dll registries as well as deleting them from the HKCU. Said he's also cleaned out the registry with sf scan in the command prompt as well as with Mccaffee to no avail. He's also completely updated his OS, Vista - 32bit.

I have copied the above from a text and have little to no idea what any of it is I guess this is a fairly common issue and after an exhaustive internet search for solutions he's at a dead end.

Thanks in advance....

Tom

Sounds like a buggy problem.

For 3G services for the laptop, I have used Sprint for 3 years and love it. They have coverage where I need and it's very very usable. My Dad lives in BFE Georgia and he had sprint for about a year but he was just on the fringe of their coverage area and hopped over to Verizon and couldn't be happier. Their coverage works better for him. I'd give either a solid recommendation -- Go with who has better coverage in the area they need to use it.

As for the software problem, it sounds like a typical rushed out the door mediocre piece of crap software. Contact the developer if you can find him wherever he is in India

The standard offerings by the different carriers, are mostly pretty good. The key question is really, what kind of 3G coverage does your friend get, in that rural location?

Verizon sounds like the go-to provider in that area, and that's who he is talking to...but he can't get it to work! He tried loading the needed software and just jacked his computer

He's pretty savvy with this stuff and just can't get it to load properly.

Ok, the program is called VZ access manager. Verizon's connection software. Has anyone had issues with this? Any suggestions?

Tom, make sure he is trying to install the correct version for his particular Verizon USB device. Have him confirm the model of his USB device.

He's heading over to AT&T now to check their stuff out. There are a bunch of options...do you guys have any experience with the various USBs? Any recommendations on best choice for internet used for gaming and online coursework?

Their options are here:

Though I'm not exactly sure what the difference between them is. Lots of aspects that I'm not familiar with.

For my work laptop I never used the software, just the drivers. I just went under my connections and selected the card.

We use it at work. There are a few issues with it but a visual basic error when installing is never one I have seen. We also use a little different version that contains corp controls so that might be why.

After some research in the area he just went with AT&T...less coverage, but good service there and fast. Plus that's his cell provider as well...so it was a good fit.
