Evo Users - Upgrade to Gingerbread Now!

Gingerbread has been released for the Evo.

If you're rooted & running stock, go here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1038701

You can also just update your radio, if you're running another ROM.

DO NOT update just the HTC kernel - there are reports that it horks WiFI & WiMAX.

Right now. To access the update from the home screen/Menu/Settings/System updates/HTC software Update. This will initiate the upgrade process.

Sprint released it for manual download/upgrade on Friday & will push it OTA tomorrow. This is the schedule they had previously announced.

I was posting that folks had already dissected and rooted the manual download release.

Try again in a day or two... seems Sprint is limiting the rollout. There's a manual executable floating around somewhere, but I don't have it on hand.

What about battery life? With light use, I can get 3-4 days on my extended battery. Hard to believe an ota would be faster, given it's 2x as fat (installation file).

I would argue that you really cannot make accurate comparisons like that. Unless each device is identical, is freshly wiped, has exactly the same configuration, and the same set of apps installed, any attempt at making comparisons is not worthwhile.

Also, just because an installation file is smaller or larger does not correlate its performance capabilities. For example, a ROM's installation file could be filled with dozens of wallpapers & ringtones... something that doesn't directly affect OS performance but will make the base file larger.

If you really want to assess whether the Gingerbread OTA is for you, you're best off researching under the hood at the fundamental OS differences between Gingerbread and Froyo. I should also point out that the Froyo upgrade was also mostly behind the scenes changes, but were rather significant due to the Dalvik JIT changes.

Bek, true, each individual's battery life is unique, based on what they use on the device. The better question would then be relative battery life. That is, relative to what he got with cm7. I'm suspecting they changed governors or governor sensitivity to make it more responsive.

@loki, that means it gets flashed using the bootloader, not the recovery program. ie PC36IMG.zip in the root of the sd card.

This update is super lame.
Not faster (I did compare Myan's rom to stock EVO), no battery improvement, sense 1.1, breaks netflix, radio update doesn't help with the signal, and kernel breaks wifi and 4g. When click valume bttt sound got changed and cant keep up when going up and down, when you hit power switch they eliminated couple options, power off it's really a sleep mode. Better root that sucker and load some 3 party rom and kernel, you guys will be much happier.

This new update is very buggy. My EVO is my work phone, bone bone stock, minimal apps bla bla bla, anyways....

I noticed when I'm using my Youtube app, it'll randomly just close completely. Also it keeps randomly acting as if I just tapped the power button, asking if I'd like to shut down, airplane mode, etc, even though I never pushed the power botton. Annoying. Had a few, coworkers complain about it being buggy. One guy has his Pandora app randomly quit, just like my Youtube app does. Another guy said his music got all jacked up. It would for example be playing The Beatles but be showing that a song by Metallica was on, hit next and it acts the same way. Another guy complained his phone was acting wierd after the update but didn't get into detail. Anyways, hope they fix this.

Take it to the STREETS!

Go to those apps what are doing FC's and hit clear data. That should help with the problem.

I can't see any differences between the previous version and this one, although my phone has acted weird on a few occasions, dropping calls, closing apps automatically etc. Not sure what was "upgraded".

Non-rooted EVO.

Oh, there is the handy green thing when typing now that shows you the zoomed text, thats, um, pretty cool?
