anyone getting a Samsung Tab 10.1?

just released today. i pre ordered mine from best buy a week ago. you'd think they would be on the ball and ship it to me the day it was released? nope. they shipped it out this afternoon, so i will not see it till monday. So i did what any good nerd would do, i placed another order for the tablet to be picked up at my local BestBuy after work. Now when the other tablet arrives i'll just return it.

While I'm excited about it, I'm still waiting a bit longer for the Android tablet marketplace to stabilize further.

But please write up a review when you get yours!

If you're going for an Android tablet, then the Samsung 10.1, Motorola Xoom, Asus Transformer and HTC Flyer are (or soon will be) the only decent choices on the market right now.

[Deal Alert] Receive 30% Off All Galaxy Tab 10.1 Accessories At Samsung’s Online Store

If you picked up the recently released Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, then there’s a good chance that you want some accessories to go along with it. Right now, if you use the coupon code GOOGLEIO2011 at Sammy’s official online store, then you’ll score a cool 30% off of all accessories. There is a catch, though – 60% of the currently released accessories are out of stock at the moment. However, if you’re in the market to grab the stylus, vehicle charger, travel charger, or data cable – then you’re in luck, as those are the only items currently in stock.

They need to make the phones like that. I'm just about to pull the trigger on an extra battery so I can change it out in the middle of the day!

If I already have an android phone, what's the real appeal of these?

I understand they're cool and new, but from a practical view. A netbook or even a standard laptop is cheaper than these are. I can't see myself buying one until they're around the $200 for a wifi model.

I would say half cool gadget, half netbook replacement. They're really a new niche product in my mind. I suppose it all really depends on what you already own and what your active needs are.

For example, I have a heavy 15" laptop that is somewhat portable, but I generally don't drag it from room to room - it stays in the family room by the TV. And of course I have my Evo... anyone who has been paying any attention whatsoever knows how I feel about that.

But I've found myself tempted by a tablet, to fill the niche of portability with a larger screen size. Chances are though, I would only be using it for surfing, light gaming, and watching TV/video. Do those needs, plus the coolness factor, justify the $600 for me? Not quite yet - but the temptation is growing slowly.

As another example, my girl got an iPad 1st Gen when the 2nd Gen's came out. But she has a direct use for it. Being a Speech Pathologist, she uses a number of educational apps on it with her school kids. It just also happens to be useful for surfing and other netbook-ish tasks.

So ask yourself what your needs are, and go from there.

My daughter got it cause she wanted the kindle for reading books. The tab does that and so much more. Will it replace my laptop, only when I can pry it from kids hands.

That is why we have a rooted Nook color. The wife wanted an e-reader and hey have great interactive books for the kiddo. Once I rooted it, we started using it a lot more. It is still mostly for books, but it gets used for games a lot more now as well. It was well worth the $250 we payed.

She has a netbook that she keeps next to the couch and I have a 15" macbook pro that lives there also, but they are getting old and beat up. As they start to age, the nook will get used more for casual browsing.
The bigger screen is way nicer than using our phones. Thinking of picking up something else or another one soon. The nook and the galaxy have the same processor (the nook is under clocked, but that is easily fixed) and the screens are the same, so really the difference is the camera. I have no use for that.

I've been wanting to get an eReader of sorts for my dad cause he reads a lot of books and also flies to SF and back every few weeks.

It seemed kind of hard to get specs on tablets since there are so many of those junk ones. I'll look into a nook color for him though. Rooting/flashing isn't a problem since I've done that on my DX.

Only problem with rooting, is dealing with problems that pop up from updates. You have to be willing to continue to tweak and maintain it.

That is not accurate.

The Nook Color has a single-core 800mhz processor & 512MB RAM.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 1.00GHz processor & 1GB RAM. An extra core and twice as much RAM makes a huge difference in performance.

But again, the debate goes back to how do you intend to use your tablet? Do you want to check out the newest generation of Tegra 2 Android games or are you happy playing Solitaire? Again, ask yourself, how do you see yourself using a tablet... that will help answer which offering is right for you.

I got a ViewSonic gTablet off of woot.com and it's pretty sweet for the price. Out of the box it's pretty terrible but, it's REALLY easy to flash the latest operating system (Honeycomb). Only thing I can't seem to figure out is how to get gChat back on it.
I also haven't really figured out what to use it for...
In hindsight, the Asus EEE Transformer looks and feels SUPER awesome and is of exceptional build quality.

If anyone has a gTablet and is wondering how to get Android 3.0 Honeycomb, drop me a PM and I'll help you out.

Sorry, left a bit out of that. I am referring to the original galaxy tab and not the 10.1. So you are correct o the 10.1 having the higher ram and dual core processor. The regular tab has a 7" screen and the same ram and processor as the nook. Sorry for the confusion

Care to back up that assertion with some solid facts?

Recounting a few personal experiences does not mean that your experiences were universal, so don't even bother with a personal story.

This'll be interesting... we're waiting.

Are you kidding? The motorola xoom is the biggest pile of shit tablet to come out. Well next to the blackberry playbook. The asus is by far the best bang for the buck. Do you own researching and testing if you don't care what my personal opinion is.
