Htc evo 3d

Got the EVO 3D yesterday. My first smartphone. I've been using the last two iTouch gens for awhile now.

No doubt it's beautiful, the screen is large and bright. But it's been a pain to get and use so far.

First off, Sprint sales chat and phone support sucked for getting the phone. No one had the same story. I am a gold premier member and was suppose to be able to get the phone 3 days early. But I never got the e-mail with the link to purchase. Instead I was told to keep calling back or keep checking the site. So I tried on the 21st for about 8 hours until I finally asked for a supervisor on sales chat (yeah, everyone's name is Jessica?) to go to sprint.com/chat. Got the answer right away, gave me the link and I ordered the phone. Arrived the next day. The link to order is: http://www.sprint.com/ftbredbud29

When it arrived I went to sprint.com/chat again to activate since I wanted to also move my current phone to another existing line. They couldn't get the EVO 3D working. They activated but they couldn't set the IDs on so I could use it to make calls. They got my old phone swapped and while I had band practice my wife took the EVO 3D to the store and got it working. She said all the sales geeks were excited to see the phone for the first time. They had problems getting it to work as well but finally got it done. They didn't have the software update to get at the contacts to transfer them, they said to try back Friday on the hard release. No idea why Sprint waits until the last minute to do things.

Went to the HTC site to download drivers and get HTC Sync but they don't list the EVO 3D on the product support site yet. ARGH. Message that came up said HTC Sync was also on the card in the phone and I could mount it and get it from there. I've got a lot of card readers but not a micro-SD. I did just now get the USB connection to work to connect as a hard drive so I'm copying the 1.9GB contents of the micro-SD card to a backup folder on my laptop.

All in all so far, looks like a beautiful device. Large screen but cutting some teeth on learning how to use this thing and being on the bleeding edge. Seemed pretty slow to do things last night when I tried YouTube, but I've since turned on WiFi. Looking forward to messing with it today.

If anyone has tips, suggestions, or links to resource please post them up. I hope to do a lot with this phone. I'm anxious to find out today about what it can do and how to use it. I installed NetBeans and the Android SDK the other day. I might even develop some applications for it.

Excellent, thank you for the initial review and write-up!

If you find yourself with other Android questions, please feel free to post up and use my Android thread (which I see you've already found).

the 1.9GB contents of the sd card copied over pretty quick but I don't see the HTC sync app. Most of the space was the Green Hornet movie.

Odd, not sure what to tell ya, except to hop over to AndroidCentral.com, AndroidForums.com, or XDA, find their HTC 3D sub-forum, and see if anyone else has dug up a copy of it.

Personally, I've never even used HTC Sync - I sync everything to Google OTA.

Yeah, not a big deal. I'm just posting what I find, more as an FYI than a request for help. Maybe it will be helpful to someone else. I figure HTC will eventually got the stuff online. But you're right, not sure I even need it. I do need to load my contacts and I have a Google account. I'll probably do it that way.

It's pretty cool so far. I figured the 3D was just gimmicky, but I have to tell you it's pretty cool looking. I got this phone just because I needed to get one and I figured since I'll probably have it for two years I might as well get the latest phone. But looking at the 3d photos are really cool. Best I can explain is like the old 3D baseball cards you might have seen, but better and more clear. There is a very small viewing angle, you have to look straight on. But they look pretty cool and I like the idea that I could actually make a 3D photo. I don't have anything to display it on besides the phone, but still kinda cool.

Latest Sync from HTC

I got this response from HTC. Since the EVO 3D is still not listed as a product in support I figured I'd post it here.

Quote:
I apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing with locating a compatible version of HTC Sync. I will be more than happy to assist you with this issue. The latest version of HTC Sync can be located here http://www.htc.com/www/SupportViewNe...97&news_id=923. Installation instructions:

1. Select the file "HTC Sync" and Click Download below to download “Setup_3.0.5557.exe” to your PC.
2. Run “Setup_3.0.5557.exe” to install it to your PC, and follow the Install Shield Wizard to finish the installation.
(Suggestion: Please close all running programs and temporarily exit your anti-virus program when you install the HTC Sync)
3. Select the “Complete” Setup Type for faster and easier installation process, and then press “Install” to begin the installation. (For advanced users you could choose “Custom” to change the pre-defined shortcuts and the installed application folder path by your own.)
4. After you saw the Install Shield Wizard Completed, please press “Finish” to exit the Wizard.

Start to use HTC Sync:

1. Use the USB cable to connect your phone to the PC.
2. When your phone prompts you to choose a type of USB connection, tap HTC Sync, and then tap Done.
3. Wait for HTC Sync to recognize your phone. On the Device setup screen, enter a name for your phone.
4. Click Save. The Device panel then opens. On the Device panel, you can set your sync options, see your phone's general information, check the used and available space on your storage card, and begin synchronization.

If you cannot see the HTC Sync option when you connect your phone to the computer via USB, please follow the instructions below:

1. Make sure you select USB Debugging in Settings > Applications > Development before connecting your phone to the computer.
2. Connect you Phone to the PC and wait 20 seconds for your phone to install HTC Sync on your phone.
3. Unplug the USB sync cable. Wait for 5 seconds. Reconnect the Phone to the PC using the USB cable.
4. Select “HTC sync” and wait for HTC Sync to recognize your Phone. This process could take up to a minute your first time connecting to the computer.

If Jack cant easily figure this phone out, I'm glad I don't have it. Bleeding tech sounds like torture.

What's going on Jack?

Hey Kruz! Going good!

The phone is cool. I'm sure it's like any new phone--a little frustrating that all the pieces from the various vendors aren't ready or available. But it's not a big deal.

I'm digging the phone. I'm getting used to the various Andriod ways of doing things.

As Bek pointed out, I used GMail to organize my contacts. Was never to keep about keeping contact info online at a free site, but figured WTH. I exported my contacts from Outlook and imported them into Google's Gmail. They automatically sync to the phone.

I used the phones operations (which I beleive is HTC Sense) to link my contacts to their facebook profiles and other similar entities. Pretty cool. I can go tot he People folder, bring up a person or favorite and see their facebook posts, photos, e-mails, etc. all in one place. Pretty cool.

Spiderman 3D Game

The phone came with a 3D version of a Spiderman game. Well, 3d in that there are varying depth levels of 2d animations. Kind of hockey, but I thought it was worth mentioning that this app didn't play well with the phone. I got a phone call while playing it and when switching over it confused the phone to whether it was in 2d or 3d mode.

I closed the Spiderman app, killed it in Task Manager and still the Home screen of the phone showed remenants of the game, tried to display in 3D and had some bad video remnants. I turned the phone off and still same problems. Restarting the phone fixed the problems.

So, not sure the ~184 MB download necessary to actually play the game was worth it.
