Google Plus: The Next Facebook?

Seems Google decided to try getting into the social networking game, with Google Plus...

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/...real-life.html

If you're interested in checking it out, I have invites to get you in. PM me your gmail address and I'll get an invite out ASAP.

UPDATE: Google stopped allowing invites last night, so I cannot send any more out. I'll be checking regularly and will send out invites to everyone who PM'd me, when they open it back up again.

they already tried something similar once, which was a disaster (can't remember the name of it at this moment)...

But why not, I'll give it a whirl. PM on the way.

Odd - either Google's been overwhelmed and shut down invites, or I cannot send them anymore. My link to send invites disappeared. Sorry guys - maybe it'll be back tomorrow.

Even if it is awesome it is too much of a PITA to change everything over. I'll stick with FB for the time being.

I would be surprised if they don't a) have most of the information that FB does - or b) have an easy way to transfer the info.

The one feature that will be interesting, is "Hangout." Essentially it's a video chat room that you can start up amongst your different "circles." I think the younger demographic will take to it like flies to shit.

You're right; if they are smart then they would have created an easy way to transfer everything over, pics, videos, friends, lists.... etc. Otherwise why would people bother?

The one thing I think Google can promote (if they actually do this) is have more privacy protection than FB. That might get people to switch.

Thats the main reason why I will make the effort. The other reason is that I already use a lot of google products its convenient.

Facebook gives you the ability to see what your friends have done (with the ability to poorly plan events in the future) if google gives users the ability to connect with friends now - ie integrating latitude - I see it being a huge winner.

Isn't that exactly what Facebook's Check In feature is?

FB won't even let Google import contacts, so it's highly unlikely that they'll let Google export everything else out of FB to GooglePlus.

Ugg, my invites were there this morning... I sent a few out. But now, like Bek, they are gone again.

Edit, it is still letting me add people though via email.... loki let me know if you get an invite.

That's not fully enabled yet (unless that's changed in the last few minutes). Invites are not being sent out - you're just adding those people to your circles.

Even if Invites are being sent out, they're not letting new folks in. I got an invite out to a coworker last night but he didn't try getting in until this morning, after they reached their initial capacity and closed it down.

There are some conflicting reports based on the number of users you have already invited. I have a few people in my circles that said they add someone and it didn't work but a friend of theirs did the same thing and it worked fine. Both of them received email invites but only one link worked...... I think those may have been from last night though.

Looks like they officially shut down all the invites some time last night. I still had the page up at home which is why I could still see the link.. I wonder if that person ever actually got the invite.

Just read this, but have no desire to join Google+. It's worth a shot though:

Quote:
So i'm not hundred percent sure how this works but I checked my gmail email account just to clean it up and it had said someone tagged me in google plus. I clicked on view photo and than it gave me the option to join, so I did and now I am a member... no invite. Am I missing something here or did it just glitch... Some one else try... ill tag u in a photo if you want.

EDIT : IT WORKS AFTER I TAG YOU CHECK YOUR EMAIL, ill be on for a bit longer. pm me and ill tag you for a while til im tired

Gmail started as an invite only system. Now it's one of the largest e-mail systems around.

The only way I'll think about joining, is if it's a hell of a lot more secure then fb. I have fb on a severe lockdown with all the spam bs going around. Then them sharing every fucking thing which is pathetic

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!
