I overclocked my 386SX 25Mhz to 33Mhz, it blew up a month later, cost me $4k to replace it.

Buy a new computer, they're cheap as shit now.

I went from 2.6ghz to 4.2ghz stable and at the oc speed for a year+ no issues. Sounds to me like you just used a program or overclock yours vs a real overclock which is done in the bios. What kind of specs does your system have?

Overclocking depends on your Ram timing, motherboard , and cooling.
To make this correct you have to do it in increments. It will take time to dial this correctly running benchmarks and monitoring temps.
I wouldn't even play with this shit if your computer is old, all computer hardware is cheap right now, just go and buy a new one.

I got my 1.7 up to 3.1 stabil on air. Over clocked my video card as well. Now I own a Mac.

dial down your clock speed, but increase your multiplier. Eventually your going to have to bump up the voltage to handle the speed. Also consider your memory latency. When you screw it up, pull the BIOS jumpers, and the battery to reset. Write down what you do, so you know where to start again.

or just buy a faster processor

I've been building pc's for years, and I never felt the need to ever overclock any rig I have built. Get a faster proc if you need to, or just run it at what it's meant to run at.

yes i know how to do it and thats the problem i'm just not into doing it again

some specs
amd fx55
asus sli delux
2x gforce 6800 (sli) total 512 (can be oc too)
4gig mem corsir (i think)
600w power
thermaltank copper heatsink
acrilic case (part of problem holds heat)w/5+ fans

i had it from 2.6 to 3.0 fine i wonder if i can get 3.2
would need differnet case i have an old one from my even older cpu but need some cutting for power to fit flush

also i have xp64 and no other os

i want to drink, but only to kill a certain few brain cells and i don't care how many i have to take out to get to them.

look at your fans for the holding heat thing, you want flow through the case not just movement of air

Honestly if your talking about going up only .2 or .4 its not even worth it. You will not notice anything. And no matter how much you overclock that chip, its still going to be the bottleneck in the system because your gpu's will run faster then your cpu could ever dream of. Depending on the game any little bit of overclocking you do to your system your not going to see a big difference in your fps besides maybe 5fps with just a cpu oc. My honest opinion is just start a new build. Your video cards arent to bad so you can probly keep those, but everything else is really your problem for what you want to do.

What do you want to do on it? I just built a new gaming rig but I spent quite a bit more than $500. lol

The tom's hardware build offs are usually a good jumping off point. Here is the one from june. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...g-pc,2970.html The PC I just built was based off the mid and high builds but the $500 gaming rig build is a nice choice on a budget. The only thing is don't expect to play BF3, Crysis2 or Metro 2033 at any decent framerate on that type of build.

I had it bookmarked from my build a month ago.

http://bf3blog.com/battlefield-3-system-requirements/

I would use an i5-2500k vs an i3 in that budget build and probably more ram but those are going to push the cost up a bit. The card will run BF3 as it matches the "recommended" specs but it wont push high frame rates I would guess especially with only a dual core i3, look at the Metro 2033 benchmarks. Since you have a 600w PS you can save some cash there and move up the proc and memory. I got 16gb of G.Skill CAS8 1600 for $100 on sale.

Which not just open an account with Newegg and go for the preferred account? You can then have a good amount more to spend and you also have a year to pay it off with no interest. Honestly that's your best bet vs trying to be cheap and get something that just barely gets ya by. You live once dude, get a nice rig and don't look back. Newegg preferred sounds like your answer.

I've never used them till i7 and I absolutely love them. I had an issue with my first board after a few months and they even went as far as to personally call me on the phone to help walk me through some stuff they wanted me to try and when that didn't work I had a box and shipping label inside by the end of the week so I can ship it back to them for them to fix. They have gone above and beyond any company i've ever dealt with.
