New Amazon tablet

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051VVOB2/...m&linkCode=as1

7" screen is lame but the price is right.
Word is that is an Android tab but it looks like they have their own amazon GUI and I do not see a marketplace either.

I don't know how you fools read a book off of those things. My corrected eyes strain after just a few pages of digital reading.

Gimme a paper copy any day

Essentially it's a slightly older version of Android that they've tweaked to their own ends.

I expect Amazon to market this more as a successor to their Kindle - aka. a dedicated book reader that now does more. If they take that approach, it'll lessen the chances that they go directly up against the iPad and other Android tablet offerings.

I'm just curious whether that think will eventually be able to be unlocked & rooted.

In either case, I'm still holding out for quad core CPUs to roll out before buying a tablet.

Im a bit disappointed by the release today. The Amazon tablet was supposed to be an "iPad Killer"......... which would have spurred more innovation on both sides. Yeah its the right price, but with only an Amazon market place (No android), meh. Not a reader, cause the screen sucks for eye strain..... not a tablet for watching movies or shows. Barely any internal memory.

Ill stick to my Kindle and iPad.

That was the only good news. A Kindle Touch for $100 and regular kindle for $80..... FUCK YEAH!

Digital screen and e-readers use different technology. e-readers (not color screens) are supposed to be easier on your eyes. I'll see if I can find the article somewhere.

I use the Kindle App on my iPad to read books. works perfect and the bright screen is easy to read. I bought my wife a Kindle and though I m impressed with the way the screen looks in daylight, you can't read it in anything less than optimum light.

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

Funny how the "release" price just earlier this week was 250 on this and when it really happen it is 199. Man, this market is already fighting for the bottom.
Watched a webinar yesterday at work on tablets and smartphones sponsored by CEA. One of the presenters commented that the HP tablet fire sale really put a hurtin' on all makers of tablets to slash prices. (although it was unfair since profit was not a concern) Maybe Amazon is on to something, sell the hardware at or a tic above cost and make it up on services/software/apps. Sort of like video gaming machines, give away the hardware and make tons of $$ on content.

Sounds like the right way to go in this market!

I'd consider buying it if porting android onto it is simple enough and it works well.

I have prob 75 books on my iPad2, and about 100+ PDF white papers, etc...

That, and I use it for email, browsing, games, and getting all my flights and hotels on the fly.

Weighs less than a book, does a heck of a lot more. As far as reading on the device, I just increase the font size, no eye strain at all.

For SAME size font, I' prefer paper as well. But when I increase it, it is GREAT to read on a plan, in a cab, wherever.

Just my .02.

Single function devices are history.

Diggin up an old thread here....

Wife wants an e-reader for books for Xmas. She is hard on her gadgets so I dont want to spend a few hundred buck on something that will get shoved in her purse.

She reads in 15 minute intervals while picking up kids in the car and a little more at night. The Ipad is overkill as she doesnt need to surf or read email.

Being Amazon Prime members the Kindle seems like the right choice but which one? The basic one is $79 and the Touck is $100. Im not too interested in the Fire even though its only $199 as we already have an iPad.

I think it's down to the $79 vs $99 Kindle...if she's just reading is touchscreen necessary?
