Android: Ice Cream Sandwich

Who wants some ICS love?

Here's an overview of some of the new features in the latest iteration of the OS, introduced last night.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/10...isabling-apps/

Pretty big day yesterday for the Android world... first the Motorola Razr weighing in as the thinnest smartphone on the market, then the Nexus Prime with Ice Cream Sandwich! There's also teasers for the Asus Transformer 2 tablet with the first Tegra 3 quad core CPU!

The Cyanogen crew has already announced that CM9 will be ICS. They will be tackling it once the ICS source code is released.

Cool. I just fixed my phone after I somehow corrupted my OS. I'll sit tight and hopefully Cyanogen will come up with something cool.

Still waiting to mid Nov. to renew my contract so I can get a break on the phone cost, as of now looks like it is going to be the Samsung Galaxy S II. Sucks that T-mobile doesn't carry more Motorola offerings, only a handful.

LTE on Verizon is most probable... and it damn well BETTER be fucking unlocked. All other Google flagship devices have been.

I agree, it will likely be LTE on VZW (there were some doubts as recent as a few weeks ago). There is still some nervousness in the community about VZW and their lockdown policies but only time will tell. If it is unlocked or easily unlocked this is my DX replacement hands down.

If the 11/10 date holds we will all know in less than a month

Aye - I've been waiting to see what Tegra 3 (quad core) based tablets will be announced come Christmas time. I too, have been holding off on an Android tablet until a someone releases a solid tablet with BOTH a quad core CPU AND Ice Cream Sandwich. I view anything less as a waste.

The Android OS has been dessert names since inception, each for the next letter of the alphabet.

Cupcake
Donut
Eclair
Froyo
Gingerbread
Honeycomb (not really a dessert if you ask me but whatever.)

More news on the Nexus. Just me or does it seem weaker hardware wise than the Galaxy II S. Samsung still makes it but the cpu is slower than the tmobile version which has a 1.5 dual core snapdragon and the camera is less mega pics, screen however is a tic bigger on the Nexus. Selling point of the Nexus seems to be the OS, first with 4.0. Am thinking other high end new phones will get this update eventually. Missing something?

Yes, you are missing some things I'm afraid. Your analysis & conclusions are flawed.

Regarding the camera, please go Google the "megapixel myth." The first few results will better explain why having more or less megapixels on a camera, is a misleading measure of camera superiority.

Much like the megapixel myth, GHz measurement is also not an accurate metric for comparing two different CPU speeds. For example, the underlying CPU architecture & instruction-set play a significant factor in performance. Research the "megahertz myth" for more information.

If you analyze the underlying specs of the two CPUs in question (the Snapdragon S3 and Texas Instruments OMAP4460), you'll see some other differences.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snapdra...tem_on_chip%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Instruments_OMAP

Solely going off of the convenient charts in the two URLs above, you'll see that the OMAP has a dual channel memory controller vs the Snapdragon's single channel memory controller. Their GPUs are different (but I do not have the time right now to drill down into their specs to find out the differences).

Simply put, there's a lot more going on under the hood than simple numbers.
