Connecting Speakers to DVD Player

I've got a TV in my office, connected to a DVD player via HDMI.

I've got in ceiling speakers connected to a radio via regular speaker cable.

I'd like to get the TV/DVD connected to the in ceiling speakers, so when I play Christmas movies, it can be heard throughout the office.

Any idea how to do this?!? Can't get it to work.

The DVD has HDMI going to the TV. On the back of the DVD, there's also RCA Audio out (red/white RCA's). I tried connecting the RCA audio outs to the speaker cable by just touching the metal to the wire, and splicing it. Nothing works.

I figure there's got to be something "powering" the sound, like a receiver...but shouldn't the DVD player be doing that, meaning I should be able to plug into the Audio out and have it work? IF that's the case, is it that my RCA to speaker wire ghetto splice won't work?

Any help is much appreciated!!

Like Turkey said...instead of that bare metal test, just use RCA terminated speaker connections.

I dont think the HDMI out is supressing other audio outs but it might be.

The proper setup is DVD out to receiver out to TV and also out to speakers.

Hold on. The RCA jacks on the DVD player are LINE OUT jacks. They are intended to connect to a stereo amplifier, not directly to speakers. If you have AUX IN or LINE IN jacks on your radio, connect the DVD player to them and switch inputs to that. Otherwise, see if there are external speaker connections on the TV.

Failing either of those, you will need an amp to put between the DVD player and the speakers.

Thanks guys. Figured I'd need an amp.

The TV does have a audio out...but its a weird circle connection thing.

Total geekdom.

The square plastic thing with a circle in the middle is a Toslink optical audio out. It's designed to carry 5.1 or 7.1 audio to a Surround Receiver.

Just find a dirt cheap receiver on Craigslist and be done with it, you can find something well in excess of what you need for like 50 bucks

Just spend a couple bucks and pickup a badass vintage receiver like this rotel: http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/ele/2706588344.html

you could find something newer for the same price and it would probably sound crappier and look far less cool.

I think we are all missing the big picture here. Why do you want to subject your employees to Christmas music all day?

Seriously. It would drive me nuts to hear it day long.
