laptop issues with sleep mode

My laptop is running Vista, and is several years old. When I close it, or let it go into sleep mode from lack of use it seems to freeze that way. Before I could click the mouse or tap the power button and it would take me right back to where it left off. Now I have to do a force reboot (holding the power button until it goes off) and then it offers safe mode, or regular mode. I don't know of any changes that have been made to any settings etc. It just started happening over the last few days. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

I ran my antivirus program, it was good. I ran malwarebytes, also good.

I don't ride, I cook!

Some possibilities:

1. Sleep mode continues to draw power from the battery. Your laptop battery may be getting old, and may drop off in voltage faster than it used to, causing the laptop to freeze. To test - see if it does this while connected to the power supply (from before you let it sleep until after you wake it up).

2. Have you installed any new software or drivers lately? Some software that runs in the background is incompatible with sleep mode.

If all else fails, enable Hibernate mode and use that instead of sleep. The laptop doesn't use power in Hibernate mode, and will boot in less than half the time of a standard reboot.

Here's your problem.

That being said, sleep mode will save an image of your current state to RAM only, then shutdown all other devices. So the fact that it is not coming out of sleep mode could be caused by any one device in your laptop. It could be bad RAM, bad HD, bad MB, bad VC, or it could be software related - driver, OS, app. I would start by running diagnostics on your RAM and HD (press F2 during bootup). If no errors, I would do a format reload installing the lastest drivers available (you will need the system disks or you could try system recovery (press f8 during startup). If you still have issues, try a known good battery. If you still have issues, the repairs will cost more than the laptop is worth.

The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

I can't even count how many windows laptops Ive owned over the years, between personal and work.

Not a single one of them has ever been able to recover from sleep mode without some kind of issue.

ok do I did some more digging online and it seems there was a super easy fix. I didn't think it would work but I'll be damned if it didn't. I turned it off, removed the battery, rebooted with it plugged into the power source, did a standard shutdown, replaced the battery and it's working like a charm again. Weird. I guess this is a known fix, and it seems to have worked. When I close the laptop it sleeps, and when I open it and run my finger over the mouse, or tap the power button it's right back where I left it. Thanks for all the suggestions, and help. That's one of the great things about clsb!

Now I am with Tony BUT Vista BLOWS!!! I have Windows 7 at work and it's MUCH better than Vista. The repairs will probably be ore than the computer is worth like WSE says. Personally if I got a new PC, I would also get a minimum of 4 GB of RAM also. I would back up all you can on that computer before it takes a shits and dyes completely.

Or just like Tony says... Buy a Mac

Well the Mac does everything I need. Except for quickbooks.

I use the windows machine just for quickbooks and thunderbird email. I don't even have office on thier, I don't want to risk loosing all my data by having it on that inferior machine. Mac does everything else for my business.

Or just get Windows on your Mac and you can be on both OS's at the same time.

I did a search on the brand, Vista and sleep mode. I found several forums with information, but the one that seemed to have the most posts were people saying that the method that I posted had worked for them as well.
