Streaming media to Xbox360... something's wrong

A few months back I bought Western Digital's MyBook Live (suggested by michowski). Love the thing, I can access every video, picture, file and document I've ever owned from my Mac, iPad and iPhone anywhere anytime. My own personal cloud.

However there's a problem. It streams media to the Xbox360 wirelessly via something called Twonky. Now, this thing isn't working right and I need some help.

Some of my movies show up on the Xbox's dashboard, and some don't. Most will play, but a couple won't. All movies were ripped from DVD using Handbrake using a Mac. For the life of me I can't figure out why some will play and some won't play, and why some won't even show up.

All the movies are H264.
All have varying KBPS, none over 168. Some movies with a high rate will play, some won't. All with 78 kbps will play, but they look like crap.
Most movies are in stereo, the ones with 5.1 sound won't play. A couple that are in stereo won't play, but most do.
All movies are 2GB or less (I did some research and anything over 4GB won't play on the Xbox).
All movies are .m4v format.

Any idea why they won't play? I like being able to have my whole library on the cloud and can watch whatever I want through the Xbox... when it works.

If you're sharing the files on your network, you should be able to access them from the Xbox. If that works, Twonky is the problem.

I've never dealt with Twonky, but had similar issues few years back. Culprit ended up being that the streaming server didn't like some of the filenames. Either too long, or it had characters it didn't like. Pick one of the movies that won't stream, change its file name to something really simple (i.e. bullshit.avi) restart the server and see if the problem is still there.

Yep, everything still plays fine on all my Apple devices and my work Lenovo. Twonky is running on the WD drive.

Yeah, I'm thinking it might be Twonky. Should I send an email to Western Digital asking them what's up?

No kidding? Ok, I'll try that. Can't hurt.

I actually just downloaded Twonky because Windows Media Center was running so damn slow on the Xbox it was unbearable. The only issues I've had with Twonky is that it won't play 'mkv' files. Otherwise quality and sound are fine. I don't get any of the fancy DVD or CD covers like media center but I can actually play my files which is the whole point. I know this doesn't really help but figured I'd chime in anyway. Good luck.

I'm glad you chimed in. If you do have any issues other than the mkv (which I've seen on the net is well-documented. You just need to convert them to .m4v) then please post up. Especially if you've seen the same issues I have.

I'll be... Jay, your advice worked. I went through and changed the file names on some of the movies. ie: CONFESSIONS_OF_A_DANGEROUS_MIND to Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. I didn't need to change the extension. It worked.

Just gotta say "Fuckin' Microsoft." My Apple stuff didn't have any problem recognizing the videos and such. I've read PS3 people don't have these issues either.

Will do. I actually tried to convert the files but the program I have, name escapes me ATM, kept crashing so I gave up. I just plugged in my laptop into my TV and used my wireless keyboard and mouse to watch the file. I will keep you updated but it looks like you fixed your problem. Looks like I might need to do some renaming myself.
