What is the "best: software for...

...copying DVD / Blue Ray movies to a computer so they can be watched on an iPad?

All the Yahooing, Googling and Binging brings up a ton of information, but it seems like most sites are sponsored by the product rated as number one. Coincidence? Also, reading through the specs, it is hard to tell for my "know enough to be dangerous" skill level if the software will just rip a dvd to my hard drive and/or if I will need to do some surgery to stuff it into iTunes and upload to the iPad.

Disclaimer: Movies are owned not rented and I am happy to pay for the software.

Thanks!!!

Greg

handbrake, assuming you've already stripped any copyright stuff.

OK, English please.

I did use a soft cloth to wipe the dvd, but i do not have software to rip it onto my computer. Is there a combo product or do I have to get ripping software and then software like handbrake?

I think DVDFab has products that do it all in one if you want to spend some $$. You can do it for free if you're tech savvy though. It depends on how much time you want to invest in learning

So if I get this http://www.dvdfab.com/dvd-ripper.htm, I will be able to click some buttons, wait a few minutes and the dvd will compatible with iPad or do I need to get another software tool to make that happen?

I appologize for asking such basic questions, but I'd hate to interpret something wrong and then be stuck asking additional questions to fix the bind i could be in.

Thanks again.

Greg

from their FAQ:

First off, you should know that HandBrake is not a DVD/Blu-ray ripper. There are many of those out there. HandBrake's about video conversion, not stripping copy protection. For best results, you should feed HandBrake unprotected video.

Why does scanning fail, when I select the DVD Drive?

When selecting a DVD source, make sure you select the VIDEO_TS folder which will appear when you click the + beside the drive.
Also note that HandBrake does not support copy protected sources. What does "No Title(s) found...." mean and how do I fix it?

It means that one of the following are the case:

a) You've selected an input source file which is in a format which is not supported. (Find different software that supports the format.)
b) Your source is copy protected. (HandBrake is not a ripper, it does not support removal of copy protection.)
c) It's badly mastered or broken. (Find software to fix the source file)
d) Whatever software you used to rip a DVD source, either didn't do it's job, or broke something in the transfer. (Try different software)

I always feed it non-copyrighted material and it works great.
