Tablets, need your opinions

Alright, in the search for a tablet.

Helping my grandma shop for her daughter, my stepmom.

Very very basic needs, my stepmom barely knows how to use a computer

I thought the Kindle Fire would've been a good choice but it's just a lil too small in my opinion. I barely know anything about tablets.

We obviously need internet/wi-fi access, I know she would like to get online and look at pic's of family and such through e-mail and fb...I really think that is the extent of use

She might start to use it for other things like music, reading, etc.

Something affordable and not outrageous!!

Post away!!

TIA

Seriously?!

iPad3 if the budget is there.

If not, Fire is the cheapest alternative to the real deal.

iPad 2's will be going on a fire sale over the next few weeks, with the iPad 3. Find someone who wants to unload their iPad 2 to finance their own upgrade to the iPad 3.

Shelly, I just put my name on the list at the VZ store around the corner from my house for the iPad 3 - I have an ipad 1 that it will be replacing - The Batt is not what it use to be as it is almost (2) years old but it still works well - It is also the (64) Gig with the 3G on AT&T - I am sure we can work something out (not like that you gutter minded sluts..........unless Shels is into that kid of thing)

I'll keep you posted if you cannot find anything else by 3/16 when the 3 gets released

I have the Asus Eee Pad "Transformer".

I absolutely love it. Runs Android, same screen as the iPad2, I believe it has a faster processor than the iPad2, and it has removable memory.

For someone like me that only uses this thing to listen to music in the garage/basement, and watch videos while traveling, it is ideal.

The price is right, the technical aspects are in line or better with iPad2 and the Samsung Galaxy, and it had wonderful reviews all around when I bought it.

That's my recommendation.

(Oh, and since I'm not an apple Fanboy, that's a huge bonus too, though, for full disclosure, I did recently see Siri in action, and I'm quite impressed (though Siri isn't on the iPad3)).

I got my dad a Kindle Fire for Christmas so that he could check stocks online. He's also been using it a lot as an e-reader.

For the $200, I thought it was really pretty good. Screen is nice, and it's super easy to use which was super duper important to me for pops because he's 75 and has never used a computer. He still doesn't understand why keys on a keyboard aren't in alphabetical order. Also, English isn't his first language so while he can read well, his spelling/typing etc. are pretty bad.

It's kind of like he's a little kid with how he comprehends things. Everything is taken literally. Anyway, I went to a couple stores and looked at various options. The ease of use thing boiled it down to either the iPad or the Fire. Everything else looked more complicated that necessary and I'm pretty sure would have been too intimidating and overwhelming. If money were no object, I would have gotten him the iPad, hands down it's the easiest to use, and the stock app is beautiful, but I wasn't going to pay $500 for him to use one or two applications, so the Fire won. I had to hunt around for apps though. Support for Android tablet apps still sucks. Everything's made for a phone and so the type is all tiny (and ergo harder for an older person to read.) but I did find some things that work ok.

I have Kindle Fire (rooted) because amazon market sucks, so I did put Android Market on
it and it rocks. I got it new 100$ from our Buy & sell section, but I wouldn't pay 200$ for it.
For sure beats any other readers in this price range, but with the factory settings it's pretty limited.
350$ for Ipad 2 - great deal, and refurbished units from Apple look exactly like brand spanking new from the factory.

Got my dad a HP Touchapad when they were on firesale.

He never used a computer in his life and now he uses that thing religiously to read news, skype with the family and catch up on old Indian movies from the golden era.

I bought the prime a month ago but had to return it. Wifi simply sucks. Unless you have a very strong signal in your home, don't buy it. But it is georgeous and fast! I would wait for the Transformer Pad Infinity or the 300, which should be coming out in few months.

Had an Ipad, liked it but missed flash access. It was stolen. Have a Motorola Xoom and love it. IOS is good, but if you are not tech challenged, Android ftw.

Don't sell the Kindle Fire short. I know a few people that really like them. It fits a specific niche.

There is nothing firm, nothing balanced, nothing durable in all the universe. Nothing remains in its original state, each day, each hour, each moment, there is change. Change is the essence of life. Embrace change as you do life. To fight change is to live in the past.

If I had a need for one I would go this route.
Only thing I dislike is you can't finger swipe back. It would be nice to use a tablet where you can keep your hands in the same position instead of typing then going up top to go forward/back or selecting a recent page in your history.

Not a big nerd on tablets yet.

but i didn't like the kiddle(friend wanted one) and your forced to only use their format.

My preference would be to get a color version tablet, and one that you have use of many applications. Plus be able to read PDF files, and other document type files.
